Probable Pitchers
Boston will give the ball to journeyman Rich Hill, while Detroit will counter with Tyler Alexander. Hill is back with the Red Sox for his second tour of duty, after previously pitching in Boston from 2010 to 2012.

The 42-year-old narrowly edged out Garrett Whitlock for the team’s final starting rotation spot, and will once again rely on a variety of off-speed pitches to get the job done.
Hill’s fastball topped out in the high 80’s last year, and despite surrendering a 33.2% hard hit rate and a 43% fly ball rate, he limited enemy hitters to a .232 batting average.
He’s been very effective versus the Detroit batters he’s faced in the past, holding the seven starting position players from the Tigers he’s faced to only nine hits over 46 at-bats.

3.86 | ERA | 3.81 |

Alexander meanwhile, has been promoted to the Tigers’ starting rotation due to do the combination of a stellar spring training performance and injuries to other Detroit pitchers.

The 27-year-old pitched 8.2 innings of one-run ball this spring, scattering just two hits while striking out eight. He alternated his time between the bullpen and starting rotation last season, and while he pitched fairly well, he struggled versus Boston in two appearances. Alexander allowed six hits and four runs in relief against the Red Sox in a pair of Detroit losses.
Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers Betting Analysis
Boston began the season among the top-11 shortest priced teams in the World Series odds, but so far they haven’t looked like much of a playoff contender.
They’re averaging just three runs a game through four outings, and only one player in their lineup (Alex Verdugo) is averaging more than one hit per game. J.D Martinez has produced just four hits in 17 at-bats thus far, while last season’s playoff masher Enrique Hernandez is hitless through his first 17 at-bats.
Through Monday, no team in the American League has a worse batting average than Boston (.172), while Baltimore is the only AL club that has struck out more often. If you’re holding an over ticket on the Red Sox in the MLB win totals you’re probably feeling sick to your stomach.

Prized offseason free agent signing and longshot AL MVP odds contender Trevor Story missed his second straight game on Monday with flu like symptoms, and has yet to join the team in Detroit. At this point it seems likely he won’t be in the lineup again on Tuesday.
As for the Tigers, their offense has been equally as unimpressive. They’ve crossed the plate only 10 times through four games, and have scored three or fewer runs in three of four outings.

Baez and Austin Meadows, Detroit’s two prized offseason additions, have been doing their part offensively hitting .333 and .462 respectively, but the rest of the lineup is hitting a combined .147.

Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers Pick
Not surprisingly, both Boston and Detroit have seen the majority of their early games fall under the total. The Tigers have played only one game so far that produced a double-digit total, while the same goes for the Red Sox.
Neither team has shown a pulse at the plate, and the starting pitching matchup doesn’t appear to be one that will yield very many runs. One bright spot for Boston has been its bullpen which should also help the under’s case if Hill struggles. Red Sox relievers have yielded only three earned runs through 17.1 innings pitched.
Pick: Under 9.5 (-118)
