The Colorado Rockies (8-4) face the Detroit Tigers (5-7) on Sunday at Comerica Park. The series finale has a scheduled first pitch of 1:10pm ET. The Rockies will send Chad Kuhl to the hill, while the home team counters with Tyler Alexander.
Detroit is a slight home favorite in this spot and has the same odds as Minnesota (+750) in the MLB Division odds, with both trailing heavy favorite Chicago (-225).
Meanwhile, Colorado has been one of baseball’s pleasant surprises in the first two-plus weeks of the 2022 campaign. Bud Black’s club opened as +10000 longshots in the stacked NL West, but have seen those odds shorten to +8000. Colorado is still expected to win only 69.5 games though, while Detroit is projected to win nine more at 78.5 in in expected victory totals. Following a 13-0 win by the Tigers in first game of a doubleheader highlighted by Miguel Cabrera’s 3,000th hit, the Rockies finished off a 3-2 victory to beat Detroit for just the second time in the last ten meetings.

Kuhl has been splendid in his first two starts this season. The Rockies have won each by a score of 4-1 (over the Rangers and Phillies, respectively), with Kuhl picking the decision against Philadelphia. He allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out four over six scoreless innings in Monday’s outing.
Alexander has not shared the same early success. The 27-year-old southpaw was a tough-luck loser in his first start, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Red Sox after going 5.1 innings and allowing five hits, no walks and three earned runs while striking out four. But Alexander labored through 42 pitches in the first inning of an eventual 4-2 defeat to the Yankees on Tuesday that included a critical mistake.
Kuhl, Alexander Set To Square Off
Kuhl has finished above .500 only once, when he sported a 5-4 record in his 2016 rookie season. But so far, so good in 2022. The 29-year-old absolutely dominated a potent Philadelphia lineup, striking out reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper twice.

Taking the bump for the Tigers in Motown will be Alexander. His first inning error proved to be too much to overcome and led to two unearned runs coming in to roost.

Chad Kuhl vs Tyler Alexander
1-0 | Record | 0-1 |
0.87 | ERA | 4.26 |
2.07 | xERA | 3.64 |
23.1% | K% | 22.2% |
While Alexander’s career home ERA (3.83) is more than a half-run better than his career road ERA (4.44), he needs to stay focused and avoid mental errors like Tuesday’s.
Tigers Own the Rockies
These two teams do not play each other very often. But when they have, Detroit has owned Colorado. The Tigers have won eight of the last ten matchups, dating back to 2012. The Motor City Kitties got loose in Game 1 of a rainout-induced twinbill on Saturday, with shortstop Harold Castro going 4-for-5 and former No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson blasting a 3-run homer. The Rockies exacted some revenge in the nightcap, thanks to home runs by Charlie Blackmon (2-run) and and Connor Joe (solo).

Both teams are longshots in the World Series odds, with Detroit being less so (+4400 vs. ++15000).
Considering how well Kuhl has pitched so far this season, it’s surprising to see the Tigers favored .

Rockies vs Tigers Prediction
With the anticipation of Cabrera’s milestone in the rear view mirror, the home team should be in a good spot on Sunday to win the series. But i don’t trust Alexander to shut down a Colorado lineup that has only scored three runs in the first two games of this series.
I like the Rockies in this spot.
