New York vs Toronto Probable Pitchers

The 28-year-old Severino returned to New York’s active roster last week for the first start since July 13th after being placed on the 60-day injured list with a lat strain. He went five innings against Pittsburgh, allowing two hits, an earned run and a walk while striking out six in an 11-2 win.

After pitching just over 27 innings over the previous three seasons because of Tommy John surgery in 2020 and another lat strain that cost him nearly the entire 2019 season, Severino pitched to a 3.36 ERA in 17 starts this season. He struck out 101 over 91.1 innings pitched. With Frankie Montas shut down for at least 10 days, Severino’s return looms large for a Yankee club hoping to make a deep postseason run.

Meantime, Gausman rebounded from a rough outing in his previous start to toss six scoreless innings against the Phillies last Wednesday, allowing five hits (all singles) and two walks while striking out eight. He didn’t factor in the decision of an eventual 4-3 Philly victory, but the performance included 11 whiffs with his splitter — his most in any start since July 22nd.

For a team with their own October aspirations, the 31-year-old’s turn was encouraging. Overall, the Phillies went just 1-for-10 with five strikeouts against his splitter while whiffing 50% of the time (11 whiffs on 22 swings).

The Yankees weathered an extended rain delay in the Bronx to sweep the Red Sox in their four-game series 2-0 on Sunday, good for New York’s seventh straight victory overall. Aaron Judge did not hit his 61st homer of the season, but he did go 1-for-2 with a double, tying Xander Boegarts for the AL batting lead at .314 and putting him in a position to become MLB’s first Triple Crown winner since Miguel Cabrera accomplished the feat in 2012.

After going 10-18 in August, New York has turned things around in September — sporting a 15-6 mark so far this month.

Meantime, Toronto has gone 16-9 thus far in September and just split a four-game set with AL East foe (and fellow Wild Card team) Tampa Bay 7-1 on Sunday. George Springer was the offensive star, launching a two-run shot in the third and adding a fifth-inning solo blast for his 23rd homer this season.

Teoscar Hernandez and Alejandro Kirk also went deep for the Jays in the win. Toronto has +1800 odds to win the Fall Classic, while New York is at +550 in the World Series odds.

Yankees vs Blue Jays Prediction

Both of these teams enter Monday’s tilt playing well. Buoyed by the enthusiasm surrounding Judge’s chase for history, the Bronx Bombers should put up a good effort.

But Gausman — and his sinker — are in a groove right now. That has me siding with the home team Blue Jays favored at -120 odds.

Pick: Blue Jays ML (-120)
