There should be some extra juice at Vivint Arena Tuesday night, when the Cleveland Cavaliers (26-15, 8-11 away) come to town to visit the Utah Jazz (20-23, 12-7 home).
It will mark the first game back for ex-Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, who was traded to the Cavaliers in the offseason, with Utah deciding to close the chapter on a successful-ish run.
Mitchell has been a standout in his new digs, leading the Cavs to fourth in the East, just 2.5 games back of the top seed. They enter this one having won four of their last five.
As for the Jazz, who pushed back the rebuild with a blistering 10-3 start, the reality of trading away all-stars Mitchell and Rudy Gobert is starting to set in. They’ve gone 10-20 in their last 30, including just one win in their last eight.

Cleveland Betting Analysis
The Cavaliers locked up the Phoenix Suns for the second time in a week, dispatching them 112-98 on Sunday night. Both times, they held the Suns to under 100 points.
That’s about what you’d expect from the best scoring defense in the NBA, as Cleveland surrenders just 106.6 points a contest. No other team in the league is under 109 points.

Mitchell had 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting, matching Darius Garland for team-high. Garland also had seven assists and two steals, as every Cavs starter scored in double figures. Jarret Allen added 13 points, 12 rebounds and five dimes.
Mitchell, who averaged 23.9 points during his 5-year stint with the Jazz, has levelled up in the midwest, scoring 28.8 points per game on a crisp 48.8% from the field.
If there is one knock on Cleveland’s defense, it’s defending the arc. Teams are shooting 37% on them from distance this year, which is the 3rd-worst mark in the league. Even a depleted Suns’ roster hit 14-for-26 from deep, a 53.8% clip.
Utah Betting Analysis
This is sort of the Utah team we expected once they jettisoned stalwarts Mitchell, Gobert and Joe Ingles.
After beating Houston to snap a five-game losing skid, the Jazz too L’s on back-to-back nights, dropping a 126-118 decision to the Bulls, followed by their most recent 123-118 defeat at the hands of the Grizzlies.
The Jazz have slid down the West ladder, now sitting in 12th, though they are just a game behind the Portland Trail Blazers for 10th and the final play-in spot.
LAURI MARKKANEN POSTER MY GOODNESS. 🔥🔥🔥
— Hoop Central (@TheHoopCentral) January 8, 2023
One bright spot has been the consistent play of Lauri Markkanen. He led the team in scoring with 21 points and eight rebounds. He’s now led the Jazz in scoring eight straight games and 11 of the last 12. As a team, Utah hasn’t lost by double digits in any game during this slide.
Scoring hasn’t been Utah’s problem. During this skid, they’ve averaged 119.9 points per game. Unfortunately, they are surrendering 121.3 points, nearly five points more per game than their season average of 116.9, which ranks 24th.

Cavaliers vs Jazz Betting Prediction
This is the second and final meeting between these two teams. Cleveland thumped Utah 122-99 on Dec 19. Mitchell had 23 points in that game, and sat the entire fourth quarter.
Utah has been a solid bet against the elite teams in the NBA this year, going 9-1 against the spread in their last 10 against teams with a winning percentage above .600.
They will be shorthanded though, with Collin Seton (hamstring), the third-leading scorer on the team already ruled out, along with Kelly Olynyk (ankle) and Talen Horton-Tucker (ankle).
Cleveland, meanwhile, is 2-10-2 ATS in their last 14 road games, and they’re 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven visits to Utah.
This one feels different, though. Look for Mitchell to shine, and that Cleveland defense to do enough to stop the league’s 3rd-highest scoring offense.
