Spurs Slow Down Mitchell

Donovan Mitchell is just 17 for 55 from three over his last five games. He’s only notched four or more treys in three of those outings, and he’s facing a San Antonio defense which excels at limiting opponent perimeter looks. Gregg Popovich’s team is second in the NBA in percentage of opponent shots from beyond the arc.

YouTube video

San Antonio’s defense ranks poorly overall of late, but Mitchell is in line for a difficult individual matchup with Dejounte Murray. Murray is an elite defender, ranking sixth in defensive win shares among guards, and with the length to trouble Mitchell’s shot.

Fred VanVleet was held to three threes in the Spurs’ last game. Malik Monk went one-for-seven in the game before. The Spurs have a defense which forces shooters away from the three-point line, which should see Mitchell attempt fewer threes than usual (he averages 9.7 three-point attempts per game).

Given what is a minor shooting slump for the Jazz guard, there’s value backing him to make three or fewer threes on Friday night, particularly at plus odds.

  • Pick: Donovan Mitchell under 3.5 threes (+134)

Booker Continues Powering Suns Without CP3

Devin Booker averages 27, 5.8 and 8.3 over his last four games. He’s put up 36 or more points, rebounds and assists in each of those contests, as he’s taken on a much greater playmaking responsibility with Chris Paul sidelined.

YouTube video

Booker has a higher assist rate than De’Aaron Fox, Ja Morant and Giannis Antetokounmpo over that span. He’s rebounding it more frequently than Tobias Harris and Franz Wagner. While Paul’s injury is a concern for Phoenix’s NBA Championship odds, it has provided Booker an opportunity to flourish, putting up the best all-round numbers of his career.

The Suns are facing a Toronto team which is in the bottom half of the league in assists given up and ranks around average in rebounding rate over the last 10. They are a strong defensive team, but as we’ve seen so often, that doesn’t mean they can keep Booker’s scoring under control.

Booker can get to this over in scoring alone, but even if he’s not at his most lethal as a shooter, his recent production as a passer and rebounder should carry him past this line with ease.

  • Pick: Devin Booker over 35.5 points, rebounds and assists (-122)
