  • A rematch from last year’s NBA playoffs takes place in Los Angeles tonight as the Lakers host the Memphis Grizzlies
  • Memphis is coming off its best performance of the season, a 105-101 win at the Clippers as 8.5-point underdogs
  • See the Grizzlies vs Lakers odds, picks, and player props for Tuesday, Nov. 14

With LeBron James a game-time decision due to a calf injury, the Los Angeles Lakers (5-5, 4-0 home, 3-7 ATS) get set to host the Memphis Grizzlies (2-8, 2-3 away, 3-7 ATS) on Tuesday night at crypto.com Arena at 7:30 pm PT/10:30 pm ET.

Los Angeles forward Anthony Davis is also less than 100% as he recovers from an adductor strain, but he’s listed as probable and has managed at least 36 minutes in each of the past two games. Davis’ status coupled with LA’s perfect home record are enough for oddsmakers to position the Lakers as 4.5-point home favorites on Tuesday night.

Memphis, which started the season as a +1217 bet in the NBA Western Conference odds, have faded to +3475 during their 2-8 start to the season. The Lakers have also seen their odds get longer since opening night (+700 to +888) but they remain among the top-five favorites to win the West and are still a top-ten favorite in the NBA championship odds (+1550).

Lakers Get Past Portland Without LeBron

LeBron James, now 38, missed his first game of the season on Sunday due to a calf injury sustained during LA’s 122-119 road win over Phoenix on Nov. 10. LeBron is averaging a team-high 25.2 PPG along with 8.4 PPG and 5.4 APG (both second on the team). His services weren’t needed against the rebuilding Portland Trail Blazers as Davis led LA to a 116-110 home victory with 30 points and 13 rebounds.

Rui Hachimura (12.3 PPG) and Cam Reddish (7.0 PPG) picked up the scoring slack left behind by LeBron, recording 19 and 18 points, respectively, both well above their season averages.

Memphis and Los Angeles met in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs, and the Lakers got past the young Grizzlies 4-2, including a 125-85 embarrassment on Memphis’ home court to close out the series.

Grizzlies Struggling Without Ja Morant

With Ja Morant suspended for the first 25 games of the season (at least), the Grizzlies have looked like a shell of the team that finished second to the NBA-champion Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference during the 2022-23 regular season. Memphis lost its first six games of the season, going 1-5 ATS in the process.

Their last four have been slightly more encouraging, going 2-2 including road wins over the Portland Trail Blazers (112-100) and LA Clippers (105-101) but there is still massive cause for concern.  The Grizzlies’ -5.5 point differential is sixth-worst in the entire NBA and their 108.6 PPG is fourth-worst.

Reigning DPOY Jaren Jackson Jr has faded from his perch atop the 2024 NBA Defensive Player of the Year odds and now sits third behind both Rudy Gobert and Evan Mobley.

Player props and odds from the FanDuel app

The highest point total tonight belongs to Memphis’ leading-scorer Desmond Bane at 26.5, which is his exact season average to date. Davis (25.5) and James (24.5) have the highest O/Us among the Lakers. Wagers on James will be voided if he doesn’t suit up, but they will stand if he plays a single minute.

Grizzlies vs Lakers Prediction

With his nemesis Dillon Brooks now in Houston, LeBron’s motivation to suit up against Memphis may be a little lower, but this line is still an insult to the Lakers. Even with Morant in the lineup last year, Memphis was a dismal 16-25 away from home (compared to an NBA-best 35-6 at home) while the Lakers went 23-18 at home and have yet to lose at crypto.com Arena this season.

I will happily lay -185 on the Lakers to hand struggling Memphis another loss, despite the fact the Grizz won in this same arena as 8.5-point underdogs just two days ago. And I’m in the (vast) majority with that opinion. The Lakers are getting 96% of moneyline handle in Tuesday’s NBA public betting splits.

MEM vs LAL Pick: LA Lakers moneyline (-185)
