Both Teams Replacing Star Point Guards

One striking similarity between Oregon and Seton Hall this season is that both teams are trying to replace their all-everything point guards. Payton Pritchard (20.5 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 5.5 APG) and Myles Powell (21.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.9 APG) were both finalists for Naismith Player of the Year and were consensus First Team All-Americans.

Now, both are getting ready for their first season in the NBA. (Pritchard was drafted 26th overall by the Boston Celtics. Powell signed with the NY Knicks after going undrafted.)

Oregon’s offense was expectedly inefficient in its first game against Missouri (an 83-75 loss). They shot just 41.3% from the floor and had only 12 assists to 10 turnovers. Encouragingly, Rutgers transfer Eugene Omoruyi had 31 points on 10/19 shooting from the field, while senior guard Chris Duarte added 22.

Coach Dana Altman’s big concern is going to be the depth behind Duarte and Omoruyi. Duarte is the only player returning from last year’s team who averaged more than five points per game.

Seton Hall lost a 71-70 heartbreaker on the road at Louisville in its first game of the year. After dusting aside 264th-ranked Iona (86-64), the were outplayed by 80th-ranked Rhode Island for the better part of 40 minutes, losing 76-63.

Like Oregon, their offense has been a shadow of the Powell-led unit fans saw last season. In 2019-20, the Pirates ended the year 29th in offensive efficiency at KenPom. This season, they have already dropped to 57th. They return a little more production than the Ducks, notably big-man Sandro Mamukelashvili (21.7 PPG, 9.0 RPG) and guard Jared Rhoden (15.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG), but they didn’t bring in an impact transfer like Omoruyi.

Take the First-Half Under

In an early-season game between two rebuilt offenses, look at playing under 65.0 (-110) in the first half. If, as the oddsmakers expect, Oregon is the slightly stronger team, they are likely to control the pace to a greater extent.

The methodical Ducks play at the 283rd-fastest tempo out of 357 DI teams (70.2 possessions per game). Seton Hall isn’t much faster at 207th (71.4 possessions per game). In a moderately-paced first half between two middling offenses, don’t expect a lot of points early on.

Pick: 1st-Half Under 65.0 (-110)
