About Last Night

Senior guard Tyreke Key scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Indiana State on Monday night. A 91% shooter at the foul line, he made eight of nine free throws, four coming in the final 21 seconds to seal the win.

Illinois State could have tied the game on its last possession but missed two 3-point tries in the final seconds.

Sophomore center Tre Williams put Indiana State ahead for good, 65-63, when he hit a 3 with 1:13 to play.

Sophomore wing Jake LaRavia had 16 points for Indiana State while Williams added 13 points and junior guard Connor Nease chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Southern Illinois sophomore guard Lance Jones scored a career-high 25 points and made three steals. He hit a 3-pointer with 12.5 seconds left that pulled the Salukis with a point.

Freshman center Kyler Filewich finished with 12 points and sophomore guard Steven Verplancken Jr. had 11 points. Leading scorer Marcus Domask missed the game with a left foot injury.

Key Keys Sycamores

After being named first-team All-MVC last season, Key has again been Indiana State’s best player in 2020-21. He is averaging 15.4 points and 5.2 rebounds a game.

Key’s 23 points on Monday were his second-highest total of the season. He had a 31-point effort in a win over Loyola of Chicago on Jan. 10.

LaRavia is averaging 11.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals a game. He also has an outstanding 58.1 free throw rate and is a 78.1% shooter from the line.

However, LaRavia had reached double figures in scoring only once in the previous six games before notching 16 points against Southern Illinois.

Nease is scoring 11.9 points a game with a 63.7 true shooting percentage. He is also making 78.1% of his free throws from the Sycamores, who ranked 17th nationally with a 77.4% mark as a team.

SIU Minus Top Scorer

Domask, a sophomore forward, will also missed Tuesday’s game. He is the third-leading scorer in the MVC at 16.3 points a game and is also averaging 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

However, Southern Illinois also pulled the upset Monday without Domask. Furthermore, they were also playing for the first time since Jan. 4 because of postponements related to COVID-19.

Jones stepped into the scoring with his 25-point efforts. He had cored a combined five points in the previous two games, both against Drake.

While Domask is the top scorer, a team-leading 29.8% of Southern Illinois’ possessions have been taken by Jones, who is averaging 13.1 points, 3.5 assists and 1.9 steals.

Sophomore guard Ben Harvey has an 11.5 scoring average. While sophomore guard Trent Brown is scoring just 7.5 points a game, he has a 65.6 effective field goal percentage and a 66.3 true shooting percentage while shooting 47.2% from beyond the arc.

Can Sycamores Sweep?

Indiana State has won three straight games in the series after sweeping Southern Illinois in two games last season. Now the Sycamores will try to make it back-to-back season sweeps.

The Salukis hung tough Monday night despite the rustiness of a three-week layoff. However, it will be difficult for them to do so on consecutive nights without Domask.

Pick: Indiana State -5.5 (-102)
