The Bulldogs are 4-3 ATS and have failed to cover the last two, losses to Brown at home and Cincinnati on the road. Stony Brook is 2-4 ATS, covering as a 16-point home underdog in a loss against Yale the last time out after failing to cover the previous three, all on the road.

Bryant Taking a Step Up

Bryant joined the American East this season and immediately  jumped to the top of the contender list, trailing only six-time defending titleist Vermont in the coaches’ preseason poll. Bulldog guard Charles Pride and forward Earl Timberlake was named to the preseason All-Conference team. Pride, an all-NEC selection last season the Bulldogs’ only returning starter from their league-champion and 2022 NCAA tournament team, is averaging 16.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

The Bulldogs are attempting to replace Peter Kiss, the leading scorer in Division I last season at 25.2 points per game, with a host of portal transfers including Earl Timberlake (Memphis), Sherif Gross-Bullock (La Salle), Antwan Walker (Rhode Island) and Doug Edert (Saint Peter’s). One-time high-profile recruit 6’6 Timberlake (15.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists) seems to have found a fit at his third school in three season after originally enrolling at Miami.

Senior guard 6’4 Gross-Bullock (15.2 points, 4.2 assists) has almost doubled his scoring average from his last season with the Explorers, and his length-of-the floor driving shot with eight-tenths of a second remaining gave the Bulldogs a 73-72 win at Syracuse on Nov. 26. The game got chippy in the first half, when one player and two assistant coach for each team were ejected.

Stony Brook Also Steps Up

Stony Brook also is in a transition season after moving to Colonial Athletic Association, and at this early stage results have been mixed. The Seawolves lost their top scorers but returned senior starters Tyler Stephenson-Moore and Frankie Policelli from a team that finished third in the America East a season ago and has a history of success there under now-Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell, winning four league titles from 2000-16.

Stephenson-Moore (14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds) Policelli (9.9 points, 8.0 rebounds) are leading the way, along with Coppin State 6’10 transfer Kenan Sarnan (10.5 points , and the team made a school-record 17 3-pointers in an 89-48 victory over NCAA Division III St. Joseph’s-Long Island. Otherwise, it has been a struggle. They lost to Florida by 36 points, Florida International by 33 and Eastern Washington by 29, and their only other victory was against and Miami-Hamilton, a tiny feeder school in Ohio.

Stony Brook vs Bryant Prediction

Bryant and Stony Brook have played competitive games the last two seasons, but that seems unlikely here. Bryant is 26-3 at home in the last two-plus seasons, and its rebuilding effort has met with much more success thus far than the one underway at Stony Brook, a one-time America East power. The Seawolves have not beaten a Division I team this season.

  • Pick: Bryant -12.5 (-110)
  • Season CBK: 9-4 ATS
