  • Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State have been given -340 odds vs the Field to win the 2022-23 College Football Playoff
  • 21 of the 24 CFP games played to date have been won by Alabama, Georgia, Clemson and Ohio State
  • Read below for details on this prop bet, plus betting advice on the 2023 CFP Title odds

As momentum for megaconferences in college football continues, the list of favorites to take home the top prize is shrinking.

A group of three teams — Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State — have been installed as -340 favorites by FanDuel over all other squads to win the 2022-23 College Football Playoff. The trio of programs are the top three favorites individually in the current National Championship odds, while Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud and Alabama QB Bryce Young are the top two names in the Heisman Trophy odds.

Considering that 21 of the 24 previous CFP games played have been won by the Crimson Tide, Bulldogs, Tigers and Buckeyes, this seems like a slam dunk wager. But, as a certain college football analyst might say, not so fast!

The Case for Chalk

History portends one of these three teams will hoist the CFP trophy on Jan. 9 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Only six schools — Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Clemson, Ohio State and Oregon – have even played in the CFP championship game (with all but the Ducks closing the deal).

‘Bama returns arguably the top two players in the game on both sides of the ball with reigning Heisman winner Young back to lead the offense and linebacker Will Anderson aiming to make defensive players more legitimate candidates for the coveted hardware.

While there were question marks for his 2021 group — how would it replace the record-breaking triplets of Mac Jones, Najee Harris and DeVonta Smith — there are no such issues for Nick Saban’s 2022 version. Plus, this group is motivated after blowing a fourth-quarter lead against an SEC rival in last season’s CFP championship game.

Georgia finally got over the hump and slayed Alabama last year behind quarterback Stetson Bennett and a defense for the ages. Folk hero Bennett is back, while UGA needs to replace some serious talent on the defensive line. But Jalen Carter returns, as does shutdown corner Kelee Ringo, so the Dawgs will be primed to prove they have the Tide’s staying power.

Then, there’s the Buckeyes. If the Stroud-Jaxon Smith-Njigba connection witnessed in a rousing 48-45 comeback win over Utah in the Rose Bowl Game is any indication of where OSU’s offense is at — which saw the receiver haul in 15 passes for 347 yards and three scores — this group is ready to rebound from disappointing losses to Oregon and Michigan. After head coach Ryan Day made big coaching moves, the Bucks appear set to return to college football’s final four.

Lincoln Riley Factor

While Clemson could bounce back from a 10-3 season and first time missing the CFP since 2014, bettors think the program with the best chance to rock the apple cart is USC.

Electric OU transfer quarterback Caleb Williams will be reunited with his former Sooner head coach Lincoln Riley in LA and has plenty of weapons to throw to — including 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison and another Oklahoma transfer in Mario Williams.

But as intriguing as the Trojans’ offense figures to be, it’s Alex Grinch’s defense that remains the biggest question mark. This unit allowed 31.8 points per game last season. There’s a manageable schedule and talent all over, but this group was 4–8 in 2021 and experienced a roster turnover greater than any in college football. USC might be a year away.

Final Analysis

While past results don’t guarantee future performance, it’s hard to ignore the sheer dominance of college football’s current Big Three. Alabama, Georgia and Oho State have the rosters — and the incentive — to keep the broken record feel of the sport alive for at least one more season.

Given the current state of college football, taking Alabama, Georgia or Ohio State to win the CFP at -340 odds at FanDuel is a great preseason bet to make.

The Pick: Alabama, Georgia or Ohio State (-340)
