  • The #13 Florida State Seminoles are 9.5-point favorites over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Cheez-It Bowl on Thursday, December 29
  • Oklahoma is 6-1 straight up all-time against Florida State
  • That includes a 3-1 Sooners SU edge in previous bowl games

The Florida State Seminoles (9-3, 8-4 ATS) will be putting perfection on the line in the Cheez-It Bowl, while the Oklahoma Sooners (6-6, 4-8 ATS) will be putting a 57-year winning streak over the Seminoles on the line.

This is the fourth appearance for the Seminoles in the Cheez-It. Florida State won this bowl game in 1990, 2008 and 2011 to sit a perfect 3-0 straight up in Cheez-It Bowl appearances. Oklahoma played its lone Cheez-It Bowl game in 2014 and lost 40-6 to Clemson.

However, the Sooners are on a six-game winning streak in head-to-head meetings with the Seminoles. Florida State won the first meeting between the two schools in the 1965 Gator Bowl. Since then, it’s been all Oklahoma. The Sooners have won six in a row overall, including a trio of bowl game triumphs. The most recent meeting was a 23-13 Oklahoma win in 2011 at Tallahassee.

It’s the #13-ranked Seminoles who oddsmakers like in this game, though. Florida State is set as a 9.5-point favorite. The Seminoles are 4-1 against the spread over their past five games.

Sooners vs Seminoles Betting Trends

The CFB public betting splits are showing heavy action on the Seminoles in moneyline wagering. There’s 64% of handle and 86% of bets backing Florida State. The Seminoles are are generating 81% of the public spread splits in terms of handle. However, the spread bets are dead even at 50-50.

There’s a more definitive feel to the total splits. Both handle (93%) and bets (57%) are going with the over. The over has hit in four of Florida State’s last six games. Oklahoma has gone over in five of the past nine games.

The opening line on this game was Florida State -2 and has since swollen by an additional 7.5 points in favor of the Seminoles.

Seminoles Travis A Key Performer

Florida State junior quarterback Jordan Travis is emerging as a legitimate double threat. He threw for at least three touchdowns in three of the Seminoles’ last five victories. In the past two games, he ran for four TDs. Over the season, Travis has passed for 22 TDS and run for seven more.

Head coach Mike Norvell’s Florida State offense is explosive. The Seminoles rank #16 in the nation in scoring offense and #12 in total offense. At receiver, the Wilsons – Johnny (five) and Ontaria (three) – have combined to snare eight TD aerials.

On defense, Jared Verse is an NFL-caliber pass rusher. He’s collected 7.5 sacks this season.

Sooners A Huge Disappointment

Oklahoma began the season considered to be a contender for a place in the CFP. Instead, the Sooners come into this game 3-6 SU over the past nine games following a 3-0 start to the season.

The Oklahoma defense has surrendered 40+ points in five of 12 games, allowing an average of 38.2 points per game during road games this season. And the defense will be missing lineman Jalen Redmond. Tied for the team lead in QB pressures (28) and second with four sacks, he’s skipping the Cheez-It Bowl after declaring for the NFL Draft.

Junior QB Dillon Gabriel emerged as a player who might be worthy of watching in the 2023 Heisman Trophy odds. He threw for six TDs and 449 yards in a regular-season ending 51-48 loss to Texas Tech.

However, running back Eric Gray won’t be there to take handoffs. Gray gained 1,366 yards on the ground and ran for 13 TDs, but like Redmond he’s run for the exit after declaring for the NFL Draft.

Oklahoma vs Florida State Prediction

Oklahoma is 2-4 SU and ATS away from home this season. Florida State is coming into the Cheez-It Bowl on a five-game winning streak. The Sooners are 2-7 ATS over the past nine games, while the Seminoles are 4-1 ATS in their last five games.

The bottom line is that Florida State has posted a much better record this season while playing in a far deeper conference.

Picks: Florida State Seminoles -9.5  (-120); Over 66 points (110)
