San Diego State is 2-5 ATS this season, 1-2 on the road, covering for the first time in a 23-7 victory at Nevada last week. The total has gone under in five of the Aztecs’ seven games this season. The line has not budged since being posted Monday.

Fresno State Presses On

The Bulldogs under coach Jeff Tedford have persevered after the loss of senior Jake Haener, arguably the best quarterback in the Mountain West when the season began.

Haener, who threw for 4,096 yards and 33 touchdowns last season, has not played since suffering a right ankle injury in a 45-17 loss at USC on Sept. 17. The Bulldogs lost to UConn and Boise State without Haener but have won the last two under reserve Logan Fife, who put up Haener-like numbers in wins over San Jose State and New Mexico.

Fife has passed for 461 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the last two games, and he rushed for two touchdowns in a 40-9 victory over the Lobos the last time out. Fife put the game away with a 30-yard keeper for a 27-10 lead midway through the third quarter. The Bulldogs had 510 yards total offense.

Haener did not practice early this week and is not expected to play. Senior running back Jordan Mims has 647 yards rushing with a 4.9-yard average per carry and six touchdowns. Mims had a career-high 187 yards rushing against the Aztecs last season, when Haener passed for 308 yards, and has two of his seven career 100-yard games against them.

San Diego State Finds a QB

The Aztecs are 2-0 since athletic senior Jalen Mayden took over at quarterback for transfer Braxton Burmeister, although the victories have come against two of the Mountain West’s weakest teams, Hawaii and Nevada.

Mayden, 6’3 and 230, spent three seasons at Mississippi State before transferring in 2021. He played safety his first one-plus seasons with the Aztecs before changing sides of the ball. Mayden has completed only 59 percent of his passes, but he has not thrown an interception and had 322 yards passing Hawaii two weeks ago.

San Diego State starting halfback Chance Bell, who missed 2 1/2 games because of a left arm injury, has 108 yards on 19 carries in the last two games.

San Diego State vs Fresno State Prediction

The Aztecs have found a quarterback (albeit an unconventional one) in Mayden, and they will be out to avenge a home loss last season against a Bulldogs’ team that is 2-6 ATS in their eight home games. Both these teams lost by 20 to Boise State (5-2, 4-0 Mountain Division) this season, but the winner of this one can position itself for a rematch in the Mountain West title game.

While the Aztecs do not score a lot (19.7 points per game), they also do not give up much (21.4). The Bulldogs will feel Haener’s loss in this one.

  • Pick: San Diego State +8.5 (-112)
