Aztecs Seeking Redemption

San Diego State (11-2) is looking to close out their season on a winning note after losing 46-13 to Utah State in the Mountain West Championship. The Aztecs were touchdown favorites in the game yet suffered their most lopsided loss since a 35-point defeat at Ohio State in 2013.

Aside from their Mountain West Championship performance, the Aztecs have had a fantastic season. Brady Hoke’s team had won four straight games and were allowing only 17.3 points per game heading into Conference Championship Weekend. The Aztecs are 6-6-1 ATS on the year.

SDSU features one of the country’s top linebackers in Cameron Thomas, who has racked up 10.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles per loss. The leader of the offense is RB Greg Bell, who is three yards shy of 1,000. The Aztecs also have the nation’s top punter in Matt Araiza, who won the Ray Guy Award.

Roadrunners Excelling Under Traylor

UTSA will look to continue their success under head coach Jeff Traylor when they face the Aztecs in the Frisco Bowl. The Roadrunners are 19-6 since Traylor took over coaching duties, including winning 15 of their past 17 games. UTSA beat WKU 49-41 in the Conference USA Championship.

The Roadrunners (12-1) opened as the favorite in the Frisco Bowl, but a key injury has made them underdogs on the betting line. All-American running back Sincere McCormick has declared for the NFL Draft and will miss the bowl game. He leads the team with 1,479 rushing yards and 15 TDs.

While the McCormick loss is significant, this is still a dangerous Roadrunners offense. Frank Harris is a dual-threat QB who has thrown for almost 3,00 yards, while WR’s Zakhari Franklin, Joshua Cephus and De’Corian Clark all rank top-20 in Conference USA receiving yards.

San Diego State vs UTSA Pick & Prediction

Can UTSA keep up their underdog magic? The Roadrunners are a perfect 4-0 when they’ve been listed as the betting underdog this season. The McCormick opt-out is notable, however, and it’s hard to ignore UTSA’s 0-2 record in bowl games. The Aztecs are 9-9 in bowl appearances.

This is a solid bounce-back spot for SDSU when you take into account key matchups. The Roadrunners are going to struggle running the ball without McCormick against this stout Aztecs run defense. SDSU is allowing only 77.6 rushing yards per game, including bottling up Utah’s ground game .

San Diego State is going to force UTSA to air it out, which is where Hoke’s defense will really shine. The Aztecs have forced 22 turnovers this season and will make big plays again Tuesday. Offensively, Greg Bell should shine against a Roadrunners rush defense that was exposed by UNT in Week 13.

SDSU played all 13 games this season outside their home stadium and have experience playing in the Frisco Bowl back in 2018. They have the better defense than UTSA and the x-factor in Araiza kicking punts. Bet the Aztecs to bounce back from an uncharacteristic loss with a convincing win in Frisco.

  • Pick: San Diego State -2.5 (-110)
