The Green Bay Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football to clinch the NFC North title. Now their Super Bowl odds have improved to +1000 as they’ll have home-field advantage for at least one round and possibly more. Are they a good investment now that they have better positioning or are they a team to avoid?

Packers Handle Vikings in Minnesota

The Packers entered Monday Night Football as a small road dog but the game wasn’t much of a sweat for them. They had two first half turnovers that handed the Vikings an early 10-3 lead but the Packers had cut it down to 10-9 by halftime. They wouldn’t allow another Vikings point the rest of the way.

It was the defense that led the way in this one as they held Kirk Cousins to just 122 passing yards and a paltry 3.9 yards-per-attempt. The Vikings had just seven first downs in the entire game while totaling 139 yards of offense. The Packers defense will have to play like this the rest of the way if they’re to make a serious run.

Are the Packers Good or Are the Vikings Bad?

One of the main questions coming from Monday’s win is are the Packers – especially the defense – that good or was it just that the Vikings were that bad? It’s probably a little bit of Column A and a little bit of Column B but keep in mind that Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins struggles both against elite teams and in primetime.

Cousins losing on Monday Night Football is nothing new. He’s played nine games on Monday Night Football and he’s lost every single one of them. That partially takes away from what was a very dominant, impressive win by the Packers. They played well but Cousins never plays well in this spot.

Packers Seeding Will Have a Great Impact

The Packers really helped themselves on Monday because their path to the Super Bowl has become a lot easier. They could have fallen into a Wild Card spot. Instead, they’re now in the running for either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the NFC.

The No. 1 seed is still a possibility if the Packers win next week over the Detroit Lions and the Seattle Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers. Even if those things don’t break their way, the Packers can still clinch the No. 2 seed and a bye if they get their win. They hold a tiebreak over the New Orleans Saints.

The win yesterday put them in the driver’s seat for a top two seed. Hosting a playoff game at Lambeau Field in January figures to be a significant advantage for a team that went 7-1 at home this season.

What’s the Best Bet?

The Packers put themselves in a better position to come out of the NFC but I’m still not on board with them. Their offense continues to go through some serious dry spells and the passing game just isn’t working. It’s not getting attention right now but Aaron Rodgers has thrown for 243 yards or less in seven straight games.

If the playoffs started today, the Packers 21st-ranked offense would be the worst of any team in the NFC and the second-worst of any of the 12 teams currently in playoff position. Their defense has played well at times this year but we’ve seen their run defense get gashed by quality teams multiple times. They rank 23rd in that category.

For those reasons, I’m just not sold on this team overall. They’ll stumble in the playoffs and I don’t trust them to win three straight games against elite teams. I’ll pass on their Super Bowl odds as there is better value like the New Orleans Saints, who are more of a complete team on both sides of the ball.
