Brady’s Return Revives Tampa Bay Super Bowl Hopes

Brady’s arrival in Tampa Bay two years ago set the stage for the Buccaneers’ march to their first Super Bowl title in two decades. With Brady flashing MVP form, the Bucs also enjoyed a steady 2021 season, racking up a 13-4 record on their way to their first NFC South divisional title since 2007.

While Brady fell short of winning NFL MVP honors for the fourth time in his career, he showed little sign of slowing down while leading the league with 5,316 passing yards and 43 touchdowns. In fact, his performance was so impressive, even the announcement of his retirement was not enough to bounce him from the NFL MVP odds next season, where he still sported +4500 odds at season’s end. Now, with his return next season assured, Brady has emerged as a short bet to break his own record as the oldest player to take home the NFL MVP award, at +800.

With Brady returning to fulfill the final year of his contract, which according to Spotrac will pay him $27.27 million and comes with a cap hit of over $20.2 million, the challenge now facing the Buccaneers is to surround their legendary pivot with the right personnel.

With Brady out of the picture, Jason Licht faced the daunting task of pushing the reset button on what was a veteran lineup designed to win now. And in addition to securing Brady’s return, the Bucs GM has pulled the trigger on a pair of key moves, slapping receiver Chris Godwin with the franchise tag, and inking center Ryan Jensen to a three-year deal.

Bucs Benefit from Weak Division

Those moves have been good enough to return Tampa Bay to the top of the odds to repeat as champions in the NFC South, where they have vaulted from a +125 bet to short -220 favorites. Indeed, the current level of competition in the NFC South may have been a factor in Brady’s decision to play at least one more season. Each of Tampa Bay’s divisional rivals look to next season facing huge questions under center, with none sporting Super Bowl odds shorter than +4000.

What is expected to be a favorable path to the postseason next season has also positively impacted the Bucs in futures betting for the NFC. Listed as a +1400 bet at season’s end, Brady’s return has lifted Tampa Bay past contenders like the San Francisco 49ers and defending champion Los Angeles Rams to a short +400 wager to reach the Super Bowl for the second time in three years.

While there is little value right now in taking the Bucs in the NFL futures, it is tough to overlook TB12’s NFL MVP odds. With the Buccaneers taking immediate steps to bolster their lineup, and the team poised to be the class of the NFC South, Brady is well positioned to once again rack up gaudy numbers next season, and is worthy of an early value bet in the NFL MVP odds.

The Pick: Brady to win 2022 NFL MVP (+800)
