  • The Tennessee Titans are 4.5-point home favorites over the Indianapolis Colts in their Week 3 NFL game
  • Sunday Betting Record: 0-0 ML; 0-3 ATS; 0-0 O/U; -3 units
  • Indy has won outright in the last three games played at Tennessee – read below for our betting prediction

Home may be where the heart is but it certainly hasn’t been where the victories are earned when the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts clash in NFL action.

The road team has won outright in five straight games and six of the last seven played between these two AFC South rivals.

Oddsmakers, though, are of the belief that the 1-1 Titans will buck this trend as they play host to the 0-2 Colts in an NFL Week 3 game. Tennessee has been established as the 4.5-point favorite to win this game. The Titans are 1-8 straight up and 2-7 against the spread in their last nine home games against the Colts.

Indianapolis Colts +200 +4.5 (-105) O 48.5 (-105)
Tennessee Titans -245 -4.5 (-115) U 48.5 (-115)

Odds as of September 25th at FanDuel

Kickoff for Sunday’s game at Nissan Stadium is 1pm ET. In the weather forecast, they are calling for clear skies, 1 mph wind and a temperature of 77 degrees.

Line Dancing

There’s been significant movement in the point spread on this game. It’s lengthened from Tennessee -2.5 to Titans -4.5.  It went as high as Tennessee -5.5 at some online sportsbooks.

That’s certainly based on the uncertain status of Colts quarterback Carson Wentz due to ankle injuries. However, the latest reports are that Wentz will be under center for the winless Colts.

Nonetheless, 58% of the bets placed against the spread are on the Titans. The moneyline splits show 86% of the bets are on the favored Titans at -245 odds. In regards to the total, 86% of the public bets are on the over (48.5). That number is also down significantly from its opening tally of 52. Again, that’s likely due to the uncertainy surrounding Wentz’s health.

Titans Offense Clicks

Tennessee looked very pedestrian in losing its season opener 38-13 to the Arizona Cardinals. Two-time defending NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry was held to a minimal 58 yards on 17 carries. All-Pro receiver Julio Jones was checked on three catches for 29 yards in his Titans debut.

Week 2 brought a 180-degree turn for the Tennessee offense. Facing the Seattle Seahawks on the road, Henry exploded for 183 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries. He also caught six passes for 55 yards. Meanwhile, Jones pulled in six receptions for 129 yards.

Defensively, Tennessee still leaves much to be desired. The Titans are the league’s #23 overall defense, allowing 813 yards through two games. Against the pass they are 27th overall in yards allowed (600) and third-worst in TD passes surrendered (six).

Red Zone Red Alert

The good news is that no NFL team has run more goal-to-go plays inside the five-yard line in the NFL this season than the eight called by the Colts. However, the bad news is that Indy hasn’t scored on any of those eight plays.

Indianapolis ran seven plays in the red zone against the Los Angeles Rams during their Week 2 home loss. Only one of them gained positive yardage.

The Colts are 25th in the NFL in scoring offense. They average 20 points per game.

Injury Report

For the Colts, Wentz is listed as questionable with sprains of both of his ankles. Right tackle Braden Smith is out with a foot injury.

Titans tight end Anthony Firkser is out with a knee injury. Strong side linebacker Bud DuPree, Tennessee’s big offseason signing from the Pittsburgh Steelers, is questionable due to a knee ailment. Cornerback Caleb Farley, the Titans’ 2021 first-round draft pick, is out with shoulder issue.

Trendspotting

The winner of Sunday’s game is guaranteed to sit alone atop the AFC South Division. Elsewhere, the Jacksonville Jaguars are 0-2 and the Houston Texans are already 1-2.

The Colts are 15-4 SU and 14-5 ATS in their last 19 games against the Titans. Tennessee is 1-4 AS in its last five home games. The winning team has scored at least 30 points in six of the past eight Colts-Titans games played at Tennessee.

Considering the record of the Colts at Tennessee, getting 4.5 points is just too tempting to pass up. The Titans’ defense looks like a unit that can be exploited.

Pick: Indianapolis Colts +4.5 (-105).
