Falcons Produce Mixed Results Under Quinn

Hired ahead of the 2015 NFL season, Quinn has produced mixed results while at the Falcons helm, which has featured the team’s infamous 34-28 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI. It has been all downhill for Quinn and the Falcons since that loss, with the team going 8-16 SU in their 24 outings since the start of the 2018 NFL season.

Now buried in last place in the NFC South standings, the Falcons find themselves in the mix on the odds to earn the first overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft as an attractive +1800 bet, while the odds of Quinn being the next to hit the unemployment line have steadily gained steam, continuing their climb after rocketing to +170 in the wake of last month’s firing of Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden.

Quinn’s coaching shake up has failed to gain the 49-year-old bench boss a vote of confidence from team owner Arthur Blank, who has publicly stated that he is using the week off to re-evaluate the organization.

And with the Falcons enjoying a much-needed bye this past weekend, Quinn has seized the opportunity to shake up his staff, reassigning three of his assistants. But Quinn’s coaching shakeup has failed to gain the 49-year-old bench boss a vote of confidence from team owner Arthur Blank, who has publicly stated that he is using the week off to re-evaluate the organization.

Daunting Schedule Looms

With a daunting second-half schedule looming, change could come to Atlanta sooner rather than later. The Falcons return to action this weekend with a visit to New Orleans, where they will battle the division-leading Saints in the first of two meetings this month as 13-point underdogs. The Falcons also look forward to two matchups each with both Carolina and Tampa Bay, as well as a Week 15 road date with the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.

The good news for Quinn and the Falcons come from reports that suggest injured quarterback Matt Ryan may be ready to return to action this weekend against the Saints. Ryan has been one of the few bright spots on this dismal squad, and sat among the passing leaders before seeing his impressive iron man run ended by an ankle injury three weeks ago. But with the Falcons now out of playoff contention, and poised to compile their worst record in franchise history, it is looking increasingly like Quinn is on borrowed time.

Gase, Kitchens on Hot Seat

However, Quinn is not the only NFL head coach perched precariously on the hot seat. Freddie Kitchens is pegged as a +450 bet to be the next head coach to leave his post after watching his Cleveland Browns fall far short of lofty expectations during a 2-6 start.

Kitchens is joined at +450 by Adam Gase, whose New York Jets are coming off an embarrassing 26-18 loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins. Anthony Lynn also sports +450 odds, but likely received a reprieve after his Los Angeles Chargers stunned the Green Bay Packers in a 26-11 upset win last weekend.

Loss in Miami, Darnold’s Struggles Threaten Gase’s Job Security

The Jets’ loss to Miami was particularly embarrassing for Gase, who coached the Dolphins for three seasons before leaving town for New York this past offseason. However, the 41-year-old has found nothing but turmoil with the dysfunctional Jets. Gase’s hiring was quickly followed by the firing of the man who brought him on board, general manager Mike Maccagnan.

And the supposed quarterback guru has also become a lightning rod of criticism for the recent poor play of second-year passer Sam Darnold, who has tossed just three touchdown passes against eight picks in three straight dismal outings.

With a favorable schedule that includes upcoming matchups with the Redskins, Dolphins, New York Giants, and the winless Cincinnati Bengals, there is still time for Darnold and the Jets to show progress. However, a repeat of last weekend’s losing performance in Miami could quickly spell the end of Gase’s brief reign in New York.

Pick: Adam Gase (+450)
