  • Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the +600 favorite to repeat as NFL MVP during the 2023 season
  • No player in NFL history has ever won both the Super Bowl and MVP in successive seasons
  • Eight of the top nine contenders in NFL MVP odds are AFC QBs

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the reigning NFL MVP. He’s also the leader of the defending Super Bowl champions and is the current NFL MVP odds favorite.

In fact, in five seasons under center for the Chiefs as their QB1, there’s not much that Mahomes hasn’t accomplished on the football field. He’s a two-time Super Bowl champion and NFL MVP. He’s led KC to three appearances in the big game and on five trips to the AFC Championship Game.

There’s one thing he hasn’t done. In fact, no player in league history has achieved this feat. That would be to win the Super Bowl and be named NFL MVP in the same season.

Oddsmakers think Mahomes is the guy who can make this type of statement. Not only are the Chiefs the pick in the Super Bowl odds again, Mahomes is the chalk to repeat in the NFL MVP odds. The betting line in both of these markets is set at +600.

Quarterbacks have won the last 10 NFL MVP awards.

Who Is Favored to Win NFL MVP?

While guiding the Chiefs to a NFL-best 14-3 record, Mahomes threw for a league-leading 5,250 yards and 41 TDs. His 308.8 yards passing per game, passing TD percentage (6.3%) and QBR (77.6) were also tops in the NFL.

It’s a boring, safe pick to play Mahomes to win the NFL MVP award. In 40% of his seasons as KC’s QB1, it’s also a bet that has paid off with a win.

Who Is the Best Bet On the NFL MVP?

Two QBs who could be in for monster years are Justin Herbert (+950) of the Los Angeles Chargers and Trevor Lawrence (+1800) of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kellen Moore is the new offensive coordinator for the Chargers. He helped to engineer some big years for Dak Prescott with the Dallas Cowboys. Lawrence will be benefitting from playing against the weak sauce that is the AFC South.

Hurts was likely on course to win this award until that pursuit was scuttled by a late-season injury. Can he be as good again this season? Joe Burrow’s early-season injury uncertainty probably slows him down just enough to prevent an MVP season for the Cincinnati Bengals QB.

Of course, plenty of early-season attention will be focused on four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in his first season at the helm of the New York Jets. And that’s going to help make the case of Josh Allen. When Allen leads a fired-up Buffalo Bills team out of the gate to prove they’re still the beasts of the AFC East, it’s only going to bolster the MVP case he was stating so well during the first half of the 2022 season.

Allen was second among NFL QBs last season in TD passes (35) and QBR (71.4). He also ran for another seven TDs.

This season, Allen finally gets over the MVP hump.

NFL MVP picks: Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) +750
