  • Two undefeated teams remain in the NFL: New England and San Francisco
  • The odds heavily favor the 49ers losing first (-1750)
  • The Patriots host the Giants on TNF in Week 6; the Niners face the Rams in LA on Sunday

There are only two undefeated teams left in the NFL: the 5-0 New England Patriots and the 4-0 San Francisco 49ers.

Everyone expected the Patriots to be this good and Super Bowl favorites once again.  The 49ers, on the other hand, have come as a major surprise, yet have played quality football and are worthy of their unblemished record.

With both teams rolling, a sportsbook has opened up a prop of which team loses first. One team is a heavy favorite, and you should be able to guess which one.

Who Loses First Odds: Patriots vs 49ers

Team Odds
New England Patriots +800
San Francisco 49ers -1750

*Odds taken 10/10/19.

When Will the New England Patriots Lose a Game?

The New England Patriots have a fairly easy upcoming schedule. They play the New York Giants tonight, followed by the New York Jets on the road and the Cleveland Browns at home. If they lose any of those three, it will be a big upset.

Patriots Upcoming Schedule

Opponent Location Week (Date)
New York Giants Home 6 (Oct. 10)
New York Jets Road 7 (Oct. 21)
Cleveland Browns Home 8 (Oct. 27)
Baltimore Ravens Road 9 (Nov. 3)
Philadelphia Eagles Road 11 (Nov. 17)
Dallas Cowboys Home 12 (Nov. 24)
Houston Texans Road 13 (Dec. 1)

After that, the road gets tougher. Road dates with the Ravens and Eagles are likely to result in at least one loss; hosting the Cowboys is no cakewalk either, at least not when Dallas’ offensive line is healthy.

When Will the San Francisco 49ers Lose a Game?

49ers Upcoming Schedule

Opponent Location Week (Date)
Los Angeles Rams Road 6 (Oct. 13)
Washington Redskins Road 7 (Oct. 20)
Carolina Panthers Home 8 (Oct. 27)
Arizona Cardinals Road 9 (Oct. 31)
Seattle Seahawks Home 10 (Nov. 11)
Arizona Cardinals Home 11 (Nov. 17)
Green Bay Packers Home 12 (Nov. 24)

The 49ers definitely have a harder schedule. They have a huge test this coming Sunday (Oct. 13) when they take on the Rams in Los Angeles.

The Rams have underwhelmed this season, but this is still the same team (for the most part) that won the NFC last year. San Fran is a 3.5-point road underdog in the latest 49ers vs Rams odds.

However, if they pull of an upset this week, they have three winnable games against Washington, Carolina, and Arizona on deck. Getting through the Arizona game unbeaten would mean that New England would have win in Baltimore to stay undefeated longer than San Francisco.

Certainly doable, but not easy.

Which games will they lose?

Ultimately, though, I see the 49ers’ streak ending against the Rams this week. And if not, Week 8 against Carolina is a reasonable bet to bring down the unbeaten Niners.

I’d never advise betting on the 49ers at prohibitively short -1475 odds, but there’s no value taking the Patriots at +800 either.
