Carolina Hurricanes Found Spark Friday Night

While the Carolina Hurricanes were playing well for the first half of the season, they had lost a tough game at home to the Florida Panthers.. After a 6-2-2 run, they are 33-11-4 on the season and are tied for first in the Metropolitan Division. Carolina is tied with Pittsburgh at 70 points for the division lead. They’re currently priced at -155 in the NHL Divisional odds.

Rod Brind’amour and Carolina made a not so subtle shift on Friday. They moved Andrei Svechnikov up to the top line with Sebastian Aho. The magic was instant as Svechnikov scored twice in the 5-3 home win over the Nashville Predators.

So, with 34 games to go, Carolina must fend off several teams in order to get the one seed in the East. Even though Frederik Andersen gave up three goals against Nashville, he did make 28 saves. Andersen has not been quite playing like a top contender for the Vezina Trophy. However, he has given up just nine goals in the last four games. It is partly why the NHL odds and implied probability (45%) do not favor Carolina on Sunday.

Penguins’ Stanley Cup Odds Shorten More

A loss to Toronto did not lengthen the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Stanley Cup odds. This is a team that started the season at around +2500 to win the Stanley Cup. Pittsburgh runs at +1500 odds to win the Stanley Cup ranked seventh among the top ten teams. During the middle of November, the Penguins were at more than +3000. Pittsburgh has picked things up due to Tristan Jarry.

Jarry is simply a workhorse. He has looked a bit human lately allowing 16 goals in his last five starts. That does not diminish the fact that Jarry has a 25-9-6 record with a 2.25 goals-against-average and a .923 save percentage. This comes with three shutouts. Combine that with how well the top line is performing and Pittsburgh can be quite a formidable team.

Hurricanes vs Penguins Prediction & Pick

The Carolina Hurricanes bounced back on Friday at home against Nashville and now Pittsburgh is looking to do the same on Sunday at home. Pittsburgh had won four straight games until their 4-1 stinker in Toronto.

So the Hurricanes have to keep the momentum rolling. With Svechnikov and Aho clicking, Carolina just needs the rest of their depth to play well. The first two periods on Friday featured different goal scorers like Jaccob Slavin and Brady Skjei. Even Martin Neccas had two assists.

As for the Penguins, they have been slugging at home losing four of their last five games. All four of those losses were by just one goal. Both goalies are capable of giving up goals but can also both shut things down.

Take the Penguins at -136 in the Hurricanes vs Penguins odds via Barstool Sportsbook and the regulation win on Sunday afternoon.

Pick: Penguins ML (-136), Penguins In Regulation (+118).
