H2H History Has A New Jersey Twist

Now, the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils played some incredible hockey this season. Overall, New Jersey went 2-1-1 against the Hurricanes and missed out on home ice by one point for this round.

One of the intriguing aspects played out in the last series for New Jersey. The Devils went down two games to none and needed overtime to avoid a 3-0 hole versus the New York Rangers. From there, they won three of the final four games of that series including 4-0 shutouts in Games 5 and 7.

Head-to-head meetings between Carolina and New Jersey have featured a little of everything. There was that crazy Sunday afternoon game and some real defensive struggles.

These games were close. New Jersey loves pace while Carolina attacks a little differently, but in waves. NHL Odds expect to be very tight.

Playoff Success And Carolina

Yes, the Hurricanes have been in the playoffs more over the past five seasons. The Vezina Trophy futures do not apply here. Frederik Andersen and Akira Schmid are not going to even come close to what Igor Shesterkin. However, Schmid posted two shutouts when it counted and Andersen came up clutch against the New York Islanders in Game 6.

Carolina’s Sebastian Aho led the way for the Hurricanes with four goals and three assists in six games. Meanwhile, Paul Stastny contributed three goals in the series and that huge game-winning tally. Add in Rod Brind’amour, who has guided Carolina to five straight playoff runs. Yes, the young Devils team has their own experience but the edge inches to Carolina.

What About One Big Carolina Concern?

Unfortunately for Carolina, the Hurricanes miss Andrei Svechnikov. When a 40-goal scorer is out of the lineup, that impacts the flow of the offense. Fortunately, Carolina was able to get out of Round 1 with timely offense and the resurgence of Sebastian Aho. Again, the power play was not great but the penalty kill was 94.4% effective.

Now, the Hurricanes know they will need an effective special teams and offense to keep advancing. Carolina’s special teams was suspect last year in the playoffs and without Svechnikov, that does not help matters. The Hurricanes need all hands on deck in what expects to be another epic battle.

Where Is The Value For This Series?

Behind the season series mastery, it appears many will lean on Carolina at +115 for the series. Carolina has been here before and has the foul taste of what happened the last two years in the playoffs

Fortunately, for the New Jersey Devils, beating the Rangers may loosen them up a little. Dougie Hamilton is on the fringe for the Norris Trophy. Honestly, Carolina carries some value at +115. If this series goes long, which goaltender holds up better? It sounds crazy but Akira Schmid might over Frederik Andersen or Antti Raanta.

Hurricanes vs Devils Series Prediction

The key for New Jersey comes down to riding the ups and downs for what expects to be a crazy series. If Jack Hughes and Timo Meier get going from the start, look out! If Sebastian Aho and the Carolina power play figure things out, the Hurricanes have the advantage. Our pick is New Jersey in seven long games.

Pick: New Jersey to Win Series (-140)
