After losing four in a row and dropping out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, the Penguins snapped their skid with a massive 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night. Captain Sidney Crosby led the way, opening the scoring to hit the 30-goal mark for the 11th time in his career.
There’s no rest for Sid and Co. as they get right back at it on Thursday, March 23rd against the Pacific Division-leading Dallas Stars. Faceoff for this contest is set for 9:00 pm ET and will be broadcast on ESPN and Sportsnet from the American Airlines Center.
All of the Penguins vs Stars odds are available below as well as our best bet and prediction for the 2nd clash between these two sides this season.
Penguins vs Stars Odds
Game Time | Team | Puck Line | Total | Moneyline |
---|---|---|---|---|
Thursday, March 23rd | Pittsburgh Penguins | +1.5 (-190) | O 6.5 (-110) | +125 |
9:00 PM | Dallas Stars | -1.5 (+155) | U 6.5 (-110) | -150 |
Uncharacteristically, the Stars have combined with their opponents for 20 goals in their last two games. A top 10 side in goals against all season, they’ve conceded 19 goals in their last four games. Taking that into account, oddsmakers have set the over/under for the Penguins and Stars at 6.5 goals.
The only previous time these teams met this year was in December, a low affair 2-1 victory for the Pens. With only a few weeks left in the season, this one is crucial for both sides. Dallas is fighting for top spot in the division in their side of the NHL playoff bracket, while Pittsburgh needs every point they can get just to qualify.

Penguins in Final Eastern Conference Wild Card Spot
Things unraveled rather quickly for the Penguins in the span of a week. Following a 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers on March 12th, the Penguins sat in the top Wild Card spot, five points ahead of 9th place Florida with a game in hand.
Four losses later and Mike Sullivan’s squad was on the outside looking in and getting set for a date with the defending Stanley Cup champions. While he isn’t a contender in the Hart Trophy odds anymore, Crosby led an inspired performance against the Avs opening the scoring with a lethal backhander en route to victory.
Simply Sidsational.
With this goal, Sidney Crosby hits the 30-goal milestone for his 11th season. Only 19 other players in NHL history have accomplished this feat. He also ties Mario Lemieux for the most 30-goal campaigns in team history. pic.twitter.com/rBOw83V7wQ

For the 2nd consecutive game, the Pens fired over 40 shots on net. In their previous contest, they deserved better, but Sens netminder Dylan Ferguson stole the show, making 48 saves and allowing only one goal in his first career start.
Once again, Pittsburgh’s offense came out determined against Colorado and if you’re taking over 40 shots on net per game, your luck is bound to change, as it did for the Pens against the Avalanche.
Stars Suddenly Scoring in Bunches
Up until March, the Stars were known for low-scoring, defensive-minded games, a recipe that made them a team to consider betting on in the Stanley Cup odds. Something has changed in a big way this month.
They have scored 52 goals in 11 games this month, an average of 4.73 tallies per game. In their first 60 games, they were a middling offensive team, averaging 3.25 per game, but with their recent goal-scoring frenzy, they now rank 8th in the league.

On the season, the Stars have gone below the total 37 times in 71 games, hitting the under in 52.1% of their games. That percentage used to be a lot higher. In their last 12 outings they have only hit the under once, going over 10 times and pushing once.
Penguins vs Stars Pick and Prediction
Traditionally, matchups between these two teams have been low scoring, as they’ve combined to go over the total in the NHL odds just once in their last eight meetings.
Penguins vs Stars Recent Results
Date | Home-Away | Moneyline | Puck Line | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|
12/12/2023 | PIT 2 – DAL 1 | PIT | DAL | Under |
01/08/2023 | DAL 3 – PIT 2 | DAL | DAL | Under |
10/19/2021 | PIT 1 – DAL 2 (SO) | DAL | DAL | Under |
10/26/2019 | DAL 0 – PIT 3 | PIT | PIT | Under |
10/18/2019 | PIT 4 – DAL 2 | PIT | PIT | Over |
Even in the only meeting where Pittsburgh and Dallas went over in their last eight matchups, they only managed to score six goals, which is below the betting line in the Penguins vs Stars odds on Thursday night.
Nevertheless, it’s impossible to bet the under in a Stars game at this point. The offensive fireworks won’t last forever, but until we see a change to that trend, our prediction is that this game goes over 6.5 goals in Dallas.
Pick: Over 6.5 Goals (-110)
