Carolina Favored in Rangers vs Hurricanes Series Odds

Carolina is heavily favored to beat New York in the Rangers vs Hurricanes series odds. The Hurricanes defeated Boston in seven games in Round 1, while the Rangers rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate Pittsburgh in seven games.

Carolina went 3-1-0 against New York during the regular season, which is one of the reasons they are such heavy favorites in the NHL odds. Taking a look at the regular season stats for both clubs, we can see the Hurricanes hold an offensive edge.

Rangers vs Hurricanes Head-to-Head Stats

The Hurricanes scored four or more goals in each of their three victories versus the Rangers this season. Forward Sebastian Aho led the team with three goals and seven points, while Andrei Svechnikov had one goal and four assists.

Rangers’ goalie Igor Shesterkin is the clear favorite in the Vezina odds, but his play in Round 1 was a bit worrisome. The Russian netminder was torched for 13 goals in three road starts at Pittsburgh. In three career starts versus Carolina, meanwhile, Shesterkin owns a lackluster .899 save percentage.

The Canes are also dealing with a goalie situation as their regular-season starter Freddie Andersen is injured. Luckily, backup Antti Raanta was excellent in Round 1 versus Boston, posting a .927 save percentage in six starts.

NYR vs CAR Betting Trends

There are some important betting trends to note before wagering on Rangers vs Hurricanes. Home-ice advantage is going to be crucial, as the Canes are 33-8-4 at PNC Arena this season. They’re also 41-14 in their last 55 games as a home favorite.

The favored team tends to have the edge in the Rangers vs Hurricanes rivalry. In the last seven meetings between the two clubs, the underdog has only won twice. When it comes to the total, the “under”  5-2 in the last seven meetings in Carolina.

The Canes haven’t made it out of the second round since 2018-19, while the Rangers haven’t advanced onto the ECF since 2014-15. Carolina is 25-8 in their last 33 playoff games as a favorite, while New York is 15-36 in their last 51 playoff games as an underdog.

Rangers vs Hurricanes Series Pick

The Hurricanes were one of the most dominant puck possession teams during the regular season, while the Rangers were bailed out by Igor Shesterkin. New York’s chances of winning this series ride on Shesterkin playing at the level he was at during the regular season.

It’s hard to be too optimistic about New York in Round 2 given Shesterkin’s road struggles plus career struggles vs Carolina. The latest Eastern Conference odds indicate oddsmakers are confident in Carolina continuing its recent dominance of New York.

The Rangers have the talent to steal a game or two at MSG, but Carolina is the better team and should prevail in the series. The Canes’ stymied the Rangers’ top-heavy offense back in 2020 and should rely on their elite defense to get the job done once again.

Pick: Hurricanes ML (-195)
