Revenge may be on the mind of the Penguins when they host the New York Rangers in one of eight games in the NHL odds on Tuesday, December 20th. It’s the first meeting between the two teams since New York defeated Pittsburgh in overtime in game seven of their first round playoff series last year.
Although the Blueshirts can’t seem to lose right now, it’s the Penguins who are -148 home favorites in this matchup. Pittsburgh is just one point behind New York in the Metropolitan division standings.
Faceoff is set for 7:00 pm ET from PPG Paints Arena with MSG and AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh broadcasting the game. Below, we dish out the Rangers vs Penguins odds while also offering up our pick and prediction for this contest.

Only four points separate first place from fourth in the Metropolitan division, so this is a huge game for both teams. Despite the Rangers hot play, their +123 moneyline odds give them an implied win probability of 44.84%, while the Pens have a probability of 59.68% to emerge victorious from this contest.
Rangers on Red Hot Roll
It’s been over two weeks since the Rangers last tasted defeat. For a team that got to the Eastern Conference Final last year, it was surprising to see their inconsistent play to start the season as they slipped in the Stanley Cup odds, but are just now trying to climb back into the top 10 while riding this seven-game winning streak.
Over this terrific stretch for New York, they’ve outscored the opposition 33-14. Of those seven victories during this run, four have come on the road where the Rangers have been particularly impressive. With 23 points from 16 games away from home, New York has the second-best road points percentage of any team in the East.
Since December 5, the date this streak started, the Rangers rank tied for first in wins (6), first in PP% (45.5), third in PK% (88.2), and fourth in goals (25). #NYR pic.twitter.com/5QF8hfpw5n

Defenseman Adam Fox continues to generate offense from the back end as he pushes his way towards the top of the list in the Norris Trophy odds. He currently sits fourth amongst NHL defensemen with 34 points so far this campaign.
Usually known for their great defensive play, anchored by Vezina Trophy odds contender Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers offense has come to life, tallying 13 times in their last two contests. They’ve hit the over in five of their last eight games, going under twice and pushing once.
Penguins Looking for Revenge in Tuesday NHL Odds
If we take a trip down memory lane to last year’s first-round battle between these two, it tells the story of a Penguins squad that will be seeking revenge. Up 3-1 in the series and 2-0 in the second period of game 5, the series completely shifted after Jacob Trouba leveled Sidney Crosby forcing him from the game.

Without their leader, the Pens fell apart and the Rangers took advantage, coming back to win 5-3. Crosby wouldn’t suit up for game 6 either as the Rangers evened the series at three games apiece. In the deciding game seven, Sid returned, but New York won 4-3 in overtime on an Artemi Panarin power play game-winner.
So, having recapped all that, we expect the Penguins to be particularly juiced up for this game. Not only would they love to get New York back for that first-round loss and injuring their captain, but it would be a feather in the cap to also halt the Rangers’ best run of play this season.
If anybody in particular would have this game circled on their calendar, it’s probably Crosby. He’s continued to amaze this year at 35 years of age leading the league in even strength points and giving bettors something to consider in the Hart Trophy odds.
Rangers vs Penguins Same-Game Parlay Picks
Pick | Odds |
---|---|
Sidney Crosby Anytime Goal Scorer | +165 |
Over 6 Goals | +102 |
PARLAY ODDS | Â +310 |
While Connor McDavid is running away with the scoring title, Sid sits tied for ninth in the league with 40 points in 31 games. He’s on pace for his first 100-point season in four years.
Rangers vs Penguins Pick & Prediction
While Shesterkin had a season for the ages last year, the Penguins found holes in his game in the first round of the playoffs. Pittsburgh scored three or more goals in six of the seven games in that series. In fact, the two teams combined to go over the betting line in every single playoff matchup last year.

They averaged over eight goals per game so we can’t hide from that trend when deciding what’s the best pick for this matchup.
In addition, regardless of the roll the Rangers are on, another prediction we’re making is that the Pens get a small measure of revenge and come out with a home victory in the Rangers vs Penguins odds on Tuesday night.
Pick: Over 6 Goals (-114); Penguins Moneyline (-148)
