- Mercedes has won five straight Formula One Constructors’ Championships
- Led by Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes is again favored to win the Constructors’ Championship in 2019
- Have Ferrari, Red Bull – or anyone else – done enough to close the gap?
The 2019 Formula 1 season is right around the corner. Not surprisingly, Mercedes – who has dominated the circuit for years – is once again favored to win the Constructors’ Championship. Are they, in fact, the best bet, or is there value backing one of the other teams?
2019 Constructors’ Championship Odds
Team | 2019 Constructors’ Championship Odds (02/11/19) |
---|---|
Mercedes | -180 |
Ferrari | +250 |
Red Bull | +350 |
Renault | +15000 |
Force India | +15000 |
McLaren | +20000 |
Toro Rosso | +25000 |
Haas | +30000 |
Williams | +40000 |
Alfa Romeo | +20000 |
The Odds Are Telling
The first thing to notice with the odds to win the 2019 Constructors’ Championship is that they’re very telling: only three teams really have a shot. There are the top three teams who are at +350 or less, and then everyone else who is at +15000 and higher.

If you’re someone who likes to find some betting value, this gives you a pretty clear message that this isn’t the place to find it. Barring some unforeseen miracle, this will be a three-horse race and that’s where your focus should be.
Have Ferrari, Red Bull Narrowed the Gap?
It’s well known that Mercedes has a huge edge in technology in Formula One. Ferrari can compete, but it’s been between them, for the most part. Has Red Bull narrowed the gap? They’ve got a pretty good car with a new engine. The challenge is that they’re not nearly as reliable as the other two. Also, Red Bull’s best bet is Max Verstappen, who is a precocious talent, but can be quite the hot head.

Ferrari is a bigger concern for Mercedes but have they been able to narrow the gap? It seems like the Mercedes cars are simply a step ahead. And if not for the cars themselves, the drivers too. Mercedes is stocked with Lewis Hamilton, who is the best in the business, and Valterri Bottas, who is excellent in his own right.
Ferrari has Sebastian Vettel, who is a four-time champion, but he’s under incredible pressure to deliver. He really fell off down the stretch last season.
Ferrari has Sebastian Vettel, who is a four-time champion, but he’s under incredible pressure to deliver. He really fell off down the stretch last season. Ferrari won just one of the final eight races. Charles Leclerc will put some pressure on him and should bump up the quality of the team. At the same time, Leclerc is making a big jump himself, so we’re not sure if he’ll be able to continue his impressive trajectory.
Mercedes is the Class of F1
I definitely wouldn’t be betting Red Bull in this spot as they’re a long shot. Yes, it’s a three-horse race but they’re far behind. It would still be a pretty big upset to see them finish on top – mostly because their car is the least consistent and their drivers are the weakest of the three.

Can Ferrari pull it off? Possibly, but they haven’t won the Constructors’ Championship since 2008. Right now, it’s the era of Mercedes and that’s why they’re heavily favored. If the payouts were bigger with the other two cars, I’d recommend taking a shot. As it stands now, Mercedes is the best play on the board to win the 2019 Formula One Constructors’ Championship.
