  • The Premier League’s leading goalscorer with seven goals this season, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero sports attractive +190 odds of outpacing Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah in UCL goals this season
  • Neymar joins Antoine Griezmann as a +155 wager to lead a group that also includes Luis Suarez despite seeing action in just one match for injury-hobbled PSG
  • With Edinson Cavani sidelined by injury to start the UCL group stage, Barcelona’s Karim Benzema has emerged as an intriguing +175 wager

The action heats up on the pitch this week as the group stage of the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League gets underway. Sportsbooks have put out a series of soccer specials providing head-to-head scoring odds covering the biggest stars in this season’s tournament.

Ronaldo Battling Slow Star With Juve

Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to overcome a relatively slow start in Serie A league play as he leads Juventus into Champions League action against some stiff competition in Group D. A seven-time top goalscorer in the Champions League, Ronaldo took a step back last season potting just six goals in nine outings as Juve failed to advance past the quarterfinals for the third time in five years.

Juventus enter the group stage as heavy -155 chalk to finish atop the Group D table. However, it will be far from a cakewalk. The club will face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid, whom they’ve beaten just once in five all-time meetings while scoring just four total goals, and are far from assured of a lengthy run at this year’s tournament.

Conversely, Sergio Aguero has emerged as a bright spot on a Manchester City squad that has stumbled out of the gate in Premier League action, potting a league-leading seven goals in five league matches. City enjoys the benefit of a favorable draw in the UCL group stage. The Citizens have emerged as massive -675 chalk to outpace Atalanta, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Dinamo Zagreb in the race for top spot in Group C, a grouping that should afford Aguero ample opportunity to fill the net.

Mo Salah sits as an intriguing +275 longshot to emerge as the top goalscorer among these three snipers. The Egyptian star has already potted four goals in five EPL matches with Liverpool, who ride a six-match win streak across all competitions into their group stage opener against Napoli.

Pick: Sergio Aguero (+190)

Can Suarez Snap Champions League Scoring Drought?

Neymar finally made his season debut this past weekend, ending weeks of speculation of where he would play by potting the only goal in Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-0 win over Strasbourg in Ligue 1 action. It remains to be seen whether the late start will impact the Brazilian star’s performance in Champions League action. The 27-year-old is coming off a pair of injury-plagued campaigns in Paris, and will not have the benefit of playing alongside Kylian Mbappe, who remains sidelined with a leg injury suffered last month.

Antoine Griezmann aims to take on a prominent role as Barcelona enters the group stage looking to claim their first Champions League title in five years. However, the Frenchman has fallen silent since potting a pair of goals in Barca’s 5-2 rout of Real Betis in the home opener on their La Liga schedule. Griezmann has failed to score in four outings since across all competitions, and has potted just six total goals in Champions League action over the past two seasons.

Suarez has been among the top goalscorers in European league play for the past four years, but the scoring touch has eluded him in the Champions League, scoring just twice in 20 total matches over the past two seasons.

Griezmann’s teammate in Barcelona, Luis Suarez, has been limited to just two league outings this season, but looked in fine form while potting a pair of markers in Barca’s 5-2 rout of Valencia last weekend. Suarez has been among the top goalscorers in European league play for the past four years, but the scoring touch has eluded him in the Champions League, scoring just twice in 20 total matches over the past two seasons. However, the 32-year-old remains an attractive bet as a +245 longshot to end his UCL scoring drought.

Pick: Luis Suarez (+245)

Edinson Cavani +145
Karim Benzema +175
Roberto Firmino +235

Benzema Ready to Shine for Real Madrid

Robert Firmino hopes to regain the form that made him one of the top goalscorers in the Champions League two seasons ago. The Liverpool attacker scored 11 times in 15 matches during the club’s march to the final, but was unable to duplicate that performance while the Reds claimed last season’s UCL title, scoring just four times in 12 appearances.

Firmino has potted just two meaningless goals for the Reds so far in the current Premier League campaign and was also largely a non-factor in Brazil’s drive to victory at this summer’s Copa America.

Edinson Cavani remains perched as a +145 favorite to lead this threesome in UCL goalscoring despite being confirmed as sidelined with injury in PSG’s group stage opener against Real Madrid on Wednesday. Cavani scored twice in three Ligue 1 outings before going down to injury, and was dominant in Uruguay’s drive towards a berth in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, scoring 10 times in 15 games. However, the 32-year-old has produced mixed results in UCL action with Paris, a club that faces a massive challenge to overcome a lengthy dismal track record at this tournament.

With four goals in four La Liga matches with Real so far this season, Karim Benzema deserves serious consideration as a +175 bet. The 31-year-old Frenchman is coming off an impressive 21-goal campaign and will be eager to make a statement after being one of the few bright spots on a Madrid squad that made an uncharacteristically early exit in the round of 16 last season.

Pick: Benzema (+175)
