In what will be a rematch of last year’s playoff semifinal, Brentford vs Swansea meet at the prestigious Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday with a ticket to the Premier League up for grabs.

The Bees are familiar with this stage, having tasted defeat against Fulham in the final in 2020. Brentford took care of business vs. Bournemouth in the semis, beating them 3-2 across two legs after initially losing by a goal in the first tie. Swansea meanwhile, slipped past Barnsley by the skin of their teeth.

These two sides played to 1-1 draws in both of their meetings this term, but the Bees won three of the four previous clashes prior.

Can Brentford Finally Earn Promotion?

Brentford has been on this stage time and time again, but they can never seem to get it done. This is the Bees’ 10th promotional playoff campaign, having failed to earn a berth to the top flight in the first nine, which is the worst record in English football.

Needless to say, they’re due. Thomas Frank’s side enjoyed another fantastic season, finishing in third spot in the Championship. Brentford bagged a league-best 79 goals, while also conceding just 42 times in 46 matches.

Frontman Ivan Toney is to thank for their lethal abilities in the final third, winning the Golden Boot race after netting 32 times and tallying 10 assists. The Englishman also scored a key goal in their dramatic second-leg victory over the Cherries last weekend.

After arriving from League One outfit Peterborough prior to this term, Toney’s has been the perfect replacement for Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahama, who pursued their Premier League dreams with Villa and West Ham.

It’s been exactly 74 years since Brentford last played in the Premier League, having finally climbed their way up to the EFL Championship in 2014 after almost 60 seasons in the third and fourth-tiers of the English footballing system.

Last year was sheer heartbreak after playing a scoreless 90 minutes against Fulham, only for the Cottagers to score twice in extra time. The Bees bagged a goal not long after, but they came up short. That feeling is all too familiar for this side as they look to break their lengthy absence from the EPL.

Revenge on Swansea’s Minds

It was in fact Brentford who ended Swansea’s run in the promotional playoff in 2020, losing 3-2 on aggregate. The Swans finished just behind their rivals this term in fourth place.

Last weekend’s second-leg with Barnsley was an absolute thriller. Matt Grimes scored a beauty for Swansea in the first half, but the visitors equalized late in the second half via striker Cauley Woodrow. However, Andre Ayew’s lone goal in the reverse fixture was enough for the Swans to hold on and advance to the final.

Ayew and strike partner Jamal Lowe have been brilliant for Steve Cooper’s men, combining for 31 of the squad’s 56 goals this season. They will certainly have their work cut out for them on Saturday though against a strong Brentford backline.

For the Swans, it hasn’t been a very long absence from the Premier League. The Welsh side was last in the top flight in the 2017/18 campaign, having spent a total of seven years at that stage.

Their last appearance in a playoff final came way back in 2010/11 when they beat Reading under the tutelage of current Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodgers.

Brentford vs Swansea Prediction

Despite Brentford’s awful run in the playoff, I believe it’s finally their time. They were fundamentally sound in all areas this term and there’s definitely a different level of hunger within this team right now knowing their poor form on the big stage.

However, this should be a competitive game. Even though the Bees and Swansea both possess solid backlines, I expect goals to be scored due to the clinical attackers throughout each side. In the end, though, Brentford will rise to the occasion at Wembley.

Pick: Brentford -115, Over 2.5 Goals (+148)
