A Chelsea vs Man City Champions League Final?

Both teams did what they needed to do in midweek to qualify for the Champions League semifinals, with Chelsea, despite losing 1-0, going through 2-1 on aggregate against Porto 2-1, while City overcame an early setback against Borussia Dortmund to win 2-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.

Now Chelsea’s focus turns to the FA Cup where they are looking to go one better than last season where they lost to Arsenal in the final. For City, it was a semifinal exit when they were beaten by the eventual winners.

Fine Start for Tuchel

En route to this semifinal, the Blues beat second-tier side Luton Town 3-1 in the fourth round, a game that ended up being the final game in the tenure of former manager Frank Lampard. Since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, the Blues have barely taken a backward step, with the German attempting to implement a free-flowing attacking style that still enables his team to be solid at the back.

While the goals have not been as plentiful as Tuchel would like and the clean sheets infrequent – they have managed just one in their last four games – Blues’ fans are more than happy with the start the German has made and they head into this game with confidence and believing a win over City is achievable.

City Still on for the Quadruple

City’s 11-point lead at the top of the EPL with six games to play means it is almost job done and is a matter of when not if, and with a League Cup final against struggling Tottenham coming up next weekend, the Citizens are within a whisker of tieing up the first two legs of their possible quadruple.

Oddly, the FA Cup has not been a particularly fruitful competition for City – unlike the League Cup which they win on an almost annual basis – with only one final appearance in the last eight seasons, when they thrashed Watford 6-0 in the 2018-19 showpiece. What City do have in their favor though is some outstanding current form – with 28 wins from their last 30 games in all competitions – although they did suffer a shock home defeat last weekend when they lost 2-1 to ten-man Leeds United.

On the way to this semifinal, Guardiola’s men made light work of Birmingham City, Cheltenham Town, Swansea City, and even Everton, scoring at least twice in each of those games, and the Spaniard also holds the upper hand in heads-to-heads with Tuchel. Their paths crossed five times between 2013 and 2016, while both were managing in the German Bundesliga, with Guardiola earning three wins and two draws.

Chelsea vs Man City Best Bets

Unsurprisingly, City starts this game as favorites but such is Chelsea’s record under Tuchel they cannot be discounted. The pressure of going for an unprecedented quadruple should not be underestimated and there were signs of it weighing heavily on City shoulders in the Leeds game.

What we do know for certain is that by Saturday evening, one of English soccer’s heavyweights will no longer be in with a chance of winning the 2021 FA Cup, and given the quality of the teams, there is every chance this could go all the way to penalties. So, for me, there is value in the +250 on offer for the draw after 90 minutes. Consider too the possibility of there being more than three goals in the game.

Pick: Chelsea and Man City to draw (+250) / Over 3.5 goals (+255)
