Honduras and the USA will both be seeking their first win in the third stage of Central and North American World Cup qualifying when they meet in San Pedro on Wednesday.

Each of these teams has so far drawn twice in the eight-team Octagonal round-robin section of the qualifying process.

Certainly, this has been disappointing for the US team which recently won the Gold Cup and is also the reigning CONCACAF Nations League champion after winning the competition this summer.

The Hondurans, meanwhile, are aiming to reach the finals for the first time since the tournament in Brazil in 2014 – which is also the last time the US side reached the big show.

The fourth-placed side, meanwhile, will enter an inter-confederational play-off for a spot at the tournament.

At FanDuel, the oddsmakers expect a better performance from the USA this time around and make it a -125 favorite for an away win.

Twin Tournament Triumphs for USA

It has certainly been a hugely successful summer for this side under coach Gregg Berhalter.

Firstly, it triumphed 3-2 after extra time against Mexico in the delayed final of the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League competition in Denver on June 6.

Then, moreover, came an even more noteworthy success in the Gold Cup.

Again, Mexico was the beaten opponent in the final – with the USA winning 1-0 after extra time in Las Vegas on August 1.

This has made the slow start to the World Cup qualifying bid a disappointing and frustrating one.

The USA, however, will be heading to Honduras unbeaten in its last 11 competitive fixtures.

A goal from Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson put the USA ahead after 55 minutes.

However, Canada equalized within seven minutes through Besiktas forward Cyle Larin.

Similarly, the US had shown more threat in the fixture against El Salvador with 13 goal attempts to the hosts seven. But nobody could break the stalemate.

Honduras Resilient in Defense

Honduras was not so impressive in its goalless draw with El Salvador, however.

It had to cling on as it was beaten in the possession statistics by 69-percent to 31-percent.

El Salvador also out-ran Honduras in goal attempts by 11 to eight.

It was a similar tale of defensive resilience against Canada in which Honduras had just 34-percent of ball possession.

The teams were equal, however, with 15 attempts at a goal each.

All the statistics suggest a tight, low-scoring affair is in store in Honduras on Wednesday.

It took a 40th-minute penalty from midfielder Alexander Lopez to put Honduras in front.

A spot-kick from Cyle Larin leveled the scores in the 66th minute.

All these statistics suggest a tight, low-scoring affair is in store in Honduras on Wednesday.

There was a 1-0 win for the US in Honduras as recently as June in the Nations League.

Among five wins and two draws in the seven-match US unbeaten run, there was a 6-0 win in March 2017 in World Cup qualifying.

So, in conclusion, a narrow US win looks on the cards this time around.
