Odds-On Nerazurri

Inter start this one as odds-on favorites and still on course for what could be an outstanding domestic double. As a result of them winning a thrilling Milan derby 4-2 at the weekend while Juventus were slumping to a surprise defeat away at Verona, the Nerazzurri have now gone top of Serie A on goal difference. And with this two-legged Coppa Italia cup semifinal coming up, things could hardly be more positive in the blue half of Madrid.

At the weekend, things started badly for them and they slumped to a two-goal deficit at halftime in the derby. However, this Inter team is made of stern stuff and the team spirit that Antonio Conte has fostered shone through in a pulsating second period where goals from Marcelo Brozovic, Matias Vecino, Stefan de Vrij and Romelu Lukaku saw them home to a thrilling victory.

Perfect Scenario for Inter

With Juve losing, it was the perfect scenario for Inter and sets them up beautifully for the first leg of this semifinal. They’ll be hoping the superiority they have shown over Napoli in the league will be translated to the cup and will be looking to head south for the second leg with a lead.

No Serie A Challenge for Napoli

For Napoli, a season they hoped would be spent challenging Juve at the top of Serie A has proved to be anything but. Gli Azzurri were hoping that last season’s second place – albeit they finished 11 points behind the champions – was to be the start of a serious challenge for the Serie A title but a poor start to the campaign saw them depart company with manager Carlo Ancellotti.

His replacement, Gennaro Gattuso, has steadied the Napoli ship but still wins have been hard to come by and they currently sit in 11th place and 12 points adrift of the league’s top four. Champions League football looks out of the question for next season, but they do remain in sight of a Europa League spot.

Only Realistic Chance of a Trophy

The Coppa Italia represents their best chance of silverware, and so they’ll be going all out for a positive result in the San Siro, although they are still in this season’s Champions League with a two-legged tie with Barcelona upcoming.

Gattuso will be expecting a fiery, passionate performance from his men in the San Siro while hoping his defense can rediscover some of the solidity of last season as they tackle the free-scoring Nerazzurri. The weekend home defeat by Lecce wasn’t the ideal preparation, however, and it’s worth noting that after 20 games, Napoli have already conceded 34 goals – only four less than they conceded in the whole of last season.

So, the smart money here looks to be on the home win, with Napoli’s defense – even with the indomitable Kalidou Koulibaly in it – looking a shadow of last season’s. It’s hard to see them shutting out Inter, so a result for them would be a narrow defeat with the home leg to come.

Pick: Inter Milan to win 3-1
