Juventus Open as -143 Favorites to Win 2020/21 Serie A Title

With the new Italian season less than a month away, it’s time to look ahead to the possible favorites to lift another league trophy in 2020/21. Juventus has been the class of Serie A for almost a decade now, having won it all in the last nine seasons. Inter Milan gave them a run for their money last season though, but the Old Lady ultimately just beat out Inter, finishing one point ahead of Antonio Conte’s side in the end.

Lazio and Atalanta were no stiffs either, with both teams finishing within the top four. Simone Inzaghi’s side fell off after the restart, but prior, they were electric. Atalanta’s vibrant attack created serious problems for many teams within Serie A. They will also be a squad to closely watch in this upcoming season.

The latest Serie A odds surprisingly have Napoli at +700 and a favorite to compete for the title. They haven’t made a lot of noise on the transfer market, however, Gennaro Gattuso’s side has signed former Lille starlet Victor Osimhen, who should add some firepower up top alongside Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne.

Can Juve Win Serie a for Tenth-Straight Year?

Even before Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Turin, Juventus was the class of Italy. No one has been able to dethrone the Serie A title holders but if this past season was any indication, it could happen soon. Inter Milan enjoyed a fantastic year but just fell short, finishing one point shy of the Old Lady. Juve lost seven times in 2019/20, the most defeats for them since the 2010/11 season, where they lost ten matches and finished in seventh place. But, with Lazio losing six times in their last 12 fixtures while Inter and Atalanta both suffered crucial defeats, Juve was able to win just enough to edge out their counterparts.

Nevertheless, it was an impressive year for the Serie A giants. Cristiano Ronaldo bagged 35 goals across all competitions, but couldn’t do enough to guide his side past Lyon in the Champions League Round of 16. Due to their disappointing season in Europe, Juve fired Maurizio Sarri after just one year and appointed club legend Andrea Pirlo as the new boss, who has no coaching experience. But, he’s quite a popular figure around Turin thanks to his playing days and there’s a sense of positivity that the Italian could be the right man for the job.

As for transfers, Miralem Pjanic has left for Barcelona, while they received Brazilian Midfielder Arthur Melo in return.

Can Inter Make the Jump?

Conte did a wonderful job of rebuilding Internazionale in his first season in charge, bringing in Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young, Christian Eriksen, and Alexis Sanchez. Young provided stability on the left, while Lukaku enjoyed a breathtaking season, scoring 34 goals, with 23 of them coming in league play. The Belgian and Lautaro Martinez formed one of the most lethal duos in Italy, accounting for 37 of Inter’s goals. Eriksen was just getting his feet wet after joining from Tottenham in January, while Sanchez made the odd appearance as a substitute. They’ve also been linked with a move for Lionel Messi, but at this point, it’s just a rumor.

Inter conceded a Serie A-low 36 goals this past season, thanks to a solid backline anchored by Stefan de Vrij and Diego Godin while also scoring 81 goals in 38 matches.

The last time Inter Milan won the league was in 2009/10. Safe to say it’s about time.

Lazio and Atalanta Should Not Be Taken Lightly

Lazio opened eyes across Europe, but a dreadful end to the season where they won just five times in their last 12 league appearances left them in fourth place. Up until the hiatus though, Inzaghi’s squad was right in the middle of the title race with Juve and Inter. Ciro Immobile won the scoring title in Serie A, netting 36 goals and assisting another nine. Midfielder Luis Alberto was his main supplier, handing out 15 assists and also scoring six times. Lazio beat Juve on two separate occasions in 2019/20, including in the SuperCoppa Italiana Final. No significant moves have been made on the transfer market for this side, but even with their current squad, they have the ability to compete within the top four.

Atalanta made headlines after scoring a ridiculous 98 goals in Italy. From the likes of Josip Ilicic, Luis Muriel, and Duvan Zapata, they had goals coming from everywhere. Although their backline was shaky at times, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have an extremely lively attack who can create havoc amongst the best. Atalanta ended up finishing in third place in Serie A and almost beat PSG in the Champions League Quarterfinals, but conceded two late goals to the French champions that led to a defeat.

Best Bet

It would be easy to go with Juventus as the Serie A champions for the tenth consecutive year. But after watching Inter Milan in 2019/20, I believe they could actually de-throne the Italian champions this season. After a year together with their new signings, Conte’s side will be even more in sync with one another.

Martinez looks to be staying put after the Barcelona rumors and will be a crucial part of Inter’s squad if they want to lift the Scudetto in 2020/21. With the unpredictability of Juve having a brand new boss, Internazionale is the best bet as of right now.
