  • Teemu Pukki surprise name at top of EPL scoring charts
  • Raheem Sterling also on fire
  • Keep an eye on Aubameyang and Rashford

While the English Premier League season is just three games old, there is a surprise early joint-leader in the Golden Boot odds—the trophy awarded to the league’s top scorer. Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki – a 29-year-old Finland international – has surprised everyone with how he’s taken to life in the Premier League, but can he keep it going?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 2 +700
Sadio Mane 1 +1400
Teemu Pukki 5 +1600
Marcus Rashford 2 +1800
Jamie Vardy 1 +2200
Alexandre Lacazette 1 +2500
Anthony Martial 2 +2500
Gabriel Jesus 1 +2500

*Odds taken 08/29/19

Pukki currently heads the goalscoring charts alongside Raheem Sterling, with both having notched an impressive five goals in their three games. The Finn’s average odds were +15000 as recent as August 12, and now his average is +1800. His odds to win the Golden Boot are as low as +1600.

The big question, of course, is will Pukki’s flying start to life in the EPL prove to be a false dawn once his goalscoring prowess and Norwich’s playing style become more well-known? Will his clever movement and fine technique in front of goal still be as effective?

Pukki on Fire

Well, while three games are too few to judge, the early signs for Pukki and Norwich are promising. The Canaries have lost two of their first three games but two of those three were against top-six opponents – Liverpool and Chelsea – and in both games, City had spells of play that promised much for the season ahead.

Even more promising was that Pukki has scored in every game – a goal apiece against Liverpool and Chelsea and a hat-trick against Newcastle – and looks as at home in the rarified air of the Premier League as he did in the Championship, where he scored 29 goals in Norwich’s title-winning season.

Also, there is the fact he’s now a regular goalscorer on the international stage, with an impressive 18 to his name, making him the joint third-highest in Finnish international history.

Can Canaries Compete?

Much will depend on how Norwich fare and if, once they have endured a nightmare opening month in which they play four of the top six, they can find the rhythm that saw them smash the Championship by outscoring their opponents. The early signs though suggest that Daniel Farke is staying true to his principles and will set his team up to attack at all costs.

So, while the Canaries may concede lots of goals, they will look to score plenty and that works perfectly for Pukki. He may not win the Golden Boot but don’t be surprised if he hits 20, and at +1600, if you’re going to have a bet I suggest you do it now rather than wait.

Raheem Tops the Charts

Sterling, of course, is playing in a fine Man City team and so, perhaps unlike Pukki, is guaranteed chances over the course of 38 games. For those reasons, he is fairly priced (+450) but the Man City player’s conversion rate will be lower as he’s not considered a ‘natural goalscorer’.

For value, consider Man Utd’s Marcus Rashford who, while already three behind the leaders, has been asked to fill the void left by the departure of Romelu Lukaku. As a result, he’ll be finding himself in more advanced positions this season and at +1800 offers some value.

A New Name in the Frame?

Harry Kane and Mo Salah will, of course, again be in the mix, but something tells me there’ll be some new names in the frame this season come next May, with Arsenal’s Aubameyang joining Pukki and Rashford among the main contenders.

My pick: Aubameyang to win the Golden Boot (+700)
