  • Man United also lost Paul Pogba to a red card in that mach

Manchester United is clearly up against it. The Red Devils will face a devil of a time advancing beyond the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.

Paris St. Germain recorded an impressive 2-0 win in the first leg February 12th at Old Trafford, sending Manchester United on the road for Wednesday’s second leg requiring a supreme rally in order to survive.

United fans are counting on more comeback magic from interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the match gets underway on Wednesday, March 6th at 3:00 p.m. EST at Parc des Princes.

As a United player in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final, Teddy Sheringham and Solskjaer scored in injury time to beat Bayern Munich 2-1.

PSG Handed Solskjaer first Defeat

Former United player Angel Di Maria and French World Cup hero Kylian Mbappe netted second-half goals as PSG dominated the first leg. Only some sparkling saves from Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea prevented the scoreline from becoming an embarrassment. Manchester United managed just one shot on goal.

It was United’s first loss since Solskjaer took the team’s helm following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December. They’d gone unbeaten in their first 11 under his tutelage.

There were five yellow cards issued during the match, including a pair to United’s Paul Pogba, resulting in his sending off and suspension for the second leg.

There was more embarrassment for both sides when UEFA fined both clubs for crowd problems during the match, which included fist fights between supporters and PSG fans ripping out seats at Old Trafford.

United Down 10 Men

Midfielder Pogba is one of 10 Manchester United players unavailable for the second leg.

French international striker Anthony Martial (groin) is among those out of action, as are Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata. Forward Alexis Sanchez is questionable following a knee injury in Saturday’s 3-2 English Premier League win over Southampton.

Martial is the closest of the group to fitness, but Solskjaer doesn’t want to risk his health with a huge Premier League game against Arsenal looming on the weekend.

Instead, it will be up to forwards Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku to lead the attack. Expect United to throw everything they have at the PSG penalty area in a bold bid to try and stage another epic rally. But to do so, they’ll need to exceed their season goals per game average of 1.83.

Manchester United is currently listed at odds of +8000 to win the European Champions League title.

PSG Rolling into Second Leg

Paris St. Germain come into the match with seven straight victories at home. Mbappe scored a pair of goals in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Caen. It was the second successive two-goal game for the striker. He has 24 goals in 21 French League games this season.

The French side is a goal-poaching machine, netting 121 times during 44 matches. They’ve tallied 13 goals in their last four matches. In three home matches so far in UEFA competition, PSG has scored 10 goals while allowing just four.

PSG is also without a couple of key players through injury. Strikers Neymar (metatarsal) and Edinson Cavani (hip) are not expected to play, although Cavani may be available on the subs bench.

Mbappe, 20, has scored five games in a row since PSG lost Neymar and Edinson Cavani to injury. He’s produced 76 goals in 79 games for PSG.

It Happened Once Before

United fans will also draw hope from the reality that PSG authored the most infamous meltdown in UEFA Champions League history in 2017. The French club squandered a 4-0 first-leg lead over Barcelona, losing the second leg 6-1 away at Barcelona’s Nou Camp Stadium.

They are at home for this key match, and that will make it difficult for Manchester United to mount a rally. There’s no magic for United this time.

Pick: PSG to cover the spread and go over
