Midweek Draw for PSG

PSG suffered a minor disappointment in the week when they were held 1-1 away in Brugge in their Champions League opener, but will be expecting no slip-ups in round 6 of Ligue 1 this weekend when Lyon visits the Parc des Princes.

While the hosts may have dropped two points in the week, this was a rarity this season as domestically they have a 100% record. Lyon, meanwhile, has been inconsistent in Ligue 1 but was outstanding on Thursday night when they beat Rangers 2-0 in Glasgow in the Europa League.

Goals Goals Goals in Paris

PSG lost out to Lille in last season’s Ligue 1, heaping the pressure on manager Mauricio Pochettino, but have responded brilliantly with those five wins from five; their most recent success being a comfortable 4-0 win over Clermont last weekend – with goals from Ander Herrera (2), Kylian Mbappe and Idrissa Gueyes. With Lionel Messi yet to find his best form in the navy blue shirt, this is ominous for the rest of Ligue 1.

The Parisiens have been full of goals, scoring four times in three of their five league games, and this plentiful supply shows no sign of abating with a front three of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. Despite them misfiring in Brugge, this is, without doubt, the best forward line in world soccer.

In Form Lyon

Lyon comes into this game in good form with three wins on the bounce, after having secured an excellent 3-1 win at home to Strasbourg last weekend before their Thursday night victory in Glasgow. A first-half goal from Moussa Dembele was added to in the second period with goals from Jason Denayer and Lucas Paqueta, with the visitors pulling one back late on.

The season has been a slow burner for Peter Bosz’s team, who registered just a single point in their opening three league games, but they are starting to show the form that took them to fourth place in the league in 2020-21; earning them, in the process, a place in this season’s Europa League.

Mbappe on Fire

But while Lyon is starting to turn the corner in terms of scoring goals, they need equally to improve a defense that has kept just one clean sheet so far in the league. Against a PSG team that, as mentioned earlier, has three world superstars leading their line, they will be tested to the limit, albeit will be buoyed by the midweek shut out in Glasgow.

Unsurprisingly, PSG’s record against Lyon is a good one, winning four of the last five Ligue 1 meetings, with their most recent meeting being a 4-2 win for the Parisiens in Lyon back in March. In that game, Mbappe scored twice, and ominously for Lyon, is in great form again; scoring four times in PSG’s last five games – a record that has, interestingly, been matched by Lyon’s Dembele.

PSG vs Lyon Best Bets

PSG starts as big odds-on favorites here with good reason. The quality in their squad guarantees them favorite status for almost every game they play and for all the quality they have in defense and midfield, it really boils down to the supreme level of talent they have in attack. Lyon will be stretched to the very limit to keep them at bay but will at least be confident after winning twice this week.

The key factor here may, however, be one that is out of their control; namely, they have two fewer days than PSG to recover from their midweek exertions in Europe. For that reason, the PSG win looks ever more likely but with the win at -290 not offering any real value, the chance to bet on Over 4.5 goals at +240 looks far more enticing.

Pick: PSG to win (-290) / Over 4.5 goals (+240)
