PSG on Fire in Ligue 1

Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe were all in the team Mauricio Pochettino selected to play Club Brugge in their Champions League opener, but despite fielding such an array of attacking talent, the Parisiens were only able to draw.

They did take the lead in the Jan-Breydel-Stadion, albeit from an unlikely source when Ander Herrera gave them the lead on 15 minutes, but the Belgians responded very well and were level before half-time through their captain Hans Vanaken. In what turned out to be an evenly fought contest, Pochettino’s world-class attacking trio was unable to find a way through a solid home defense, and a point apiece it was.

Disappointing Draw in Brugge

On the domestic front though, PSG has been simply unstoppable and after eight rounds of games, they still have a 100 percent record and a +15 goal difference. Even at this early stage, it looks like their title to lose with a nine-point gap to second-placed Lens and a 13-point advantage over last season’s title winners, Lille. Their latest success came at the weekend when they comfortably beat Montpellier 2-0.

The 1-1 draw with Brugge was the only game of the campaign so far where PSG has failed to score at least twice, although this record will be tested against a Man City team who themselves are flying both domestically and in Europe. PSG also has an indifferent recent record at home in the UCL having failed to win their last three games in the Parc des Princes.

Jesus Delivers Against Chelsea

Pep Guardiola’s men faced Chelsea, their conquers from last season’s UCL final, at the weekend, but on this occasion, it was City who edged a tight game, with Gabriel Jesus’s deflected shot being enough to earn his team all three points. It was a fine result for the Citizens who look more than capable of defending their Premier League title if the early-season skirmishes are anything to go by.

They also look to be earmarking the UCL as a prize they would very much like to win after having gone so close last season. Their 6-3 win over a quality RB Leipzig side on the opening day was a show of strength from Guardiola’s men, who will head to Paris firmly of the belief that they can make it two wins from two.

Fine Win Over Leipzig

The win over Leipzig was made to look even more valuable when PSG dropped those two points in Brugge, and a win here for City would see them take a firm grip on the group after only two games. Worth noting though is that City plays their fierce rivals Liverpool at the weekend, so Guardiola may try and mix up his squad so the players are fresh for both massive games.

But, whoever Guardiola picks, it will be a strong City team that takes the field in Paris. They are unbeaten in their last ten away games in the UCL and have won six of their last seven games.

PSG vs Man City Prediction

PSG’s 100 percent record in Ligue 1 counts for little in the UCL but it does instill huge amounts of confidence in a squad that is bursting full of quality, especially in the attacking areas. Di Maria will be missing from the PSG line-up and there is a doubt over Messi, but they will be desperate here not to lose ground on City in the group.

The draw at +255 is tempting given how well these two teams are matched but I have a sneaking suspicion that Pochettino will pull off one of his UCL masterstrokes here, with Mbappe’s pace being the difference between the two teams.

Pick: PSG to win (+200) / Mbappe last goalscorer (+450)
