With just five matches left as the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign comes to a close, SC Freiburg will host a Monchengladbach side who are fresh off a 4-1 thrashing of Union Berlin over the weekend and will be looking to carry that momentum into yet another crucial match as they seek a Champions League spot.

On the other hand, Freiburg will be looking for their first victory since football in Germany returned in mid-May, drawing and losing twice through four matches thus far.

Gladbach Fighting With Leverkusen for UCL Spot

The race for a top-four finish in Germany’s top flight continues to be exciting, with just four points separating Gladbach/Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund, who are currently in second place. Marco Rose’s men are currently tied with Leverkusen in fourth spot with 56 points apiece and identical records. Gladbach has been in solid form as of late, with their only defeat in their last four matches coming against Peter Bosz’s side on May 23rd thanks to Kai Havertz scoring a brace for Leverkusen.

Last weekend, Monchengladbach looked unstoppable against Union Berlin with their French connection of Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram bagging three of their four goals. Plea, who has been on the radar of many Premier League clubs thanks to his clinical abilities in the final third, has scored two goals and also tallied three assists in his last four appearances. Thuram has also been lethal, netting four times in just as many matches.

With just a handful of fixtures left, it will be vital that these two continue to be productive on the attack as Gladbach looks to clinch a UCL spot for next season.

Freiburg Looking for a Positive Result

Christian Streich’s squad has struggled since league competition returned in Germany, failing to secure the full three points through four matches. It won’t get any easier when they face Gladbach. However, a Europa League spot is still a possibility.

They’re currently in eighth place with 38 points, just four off Hoffenheim/Wolfsburg. They actually face the latter next weekend which will most definitely be an important clash, so it will be critical that Freiburg can muster up a point at the very least this Friday against Monchengladbach. If they can do so, it will give them a realistic shot of catching Wolfsburg when they face them on Matchday 31.

Best Bet

Given Monchengladbach’s recent form and their determination to qualify for Europe’s most prized competition, I give them the advantage this Friday. Although it was back in December, Gladbach buried Freiburg 4-2 and there’s a high chance we will see a similar result on Matchday 30.

Pick: Borussia Monchengladbach -130
