The South American Football Confederation, otherwise known as CONMEBOL is a little over halfway through World Cup Qualifying. Qatar 2022 is right around the corner, which means World Cup Qualifying matches are becoming more and more important.

In CONMEBOL, the top four teams after 18 qualifying matches automatically advance to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Meanwhile, the fifth-place side is dropped into the eventual inter-confederation play-off round, where they have another chance to qualify. Of course, the remaining five teams at the bottom will drop out and will have to try again for 2026.

Currently, those five teams at the bottom, in order from lowest to highest include Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Paraguay. Colombia holds the pivotal fifth spot, only two points above Paraguay, which makes their match against Uruguay all the more important to win.

From fourth to second sit Ecuador, Uruguay and Argentina, respectively. Argentina’s three draws in eight matches so far is what holds them back from the top spot in South America. Finally, Brazil sits in first place in World Cup Qualifying, on a staggering 24 points through eight games. In short, they have dominated, scoring 19 goals and only conceding twice.

Paraguay vs Argentina Prediction

The first CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier to highlight on Thursday is between Paraguay and Argentina. This match kicks off at 7:00 pm EST and will be played at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Asunción.

This game will be a rematch of Matchday 3 from November of last year, a fixture that ended in a one-all stalemate. Angel Romero scored from the spot that night for Paraguay, followed by a first-half equalizer from Nicolas Gonzales.

In a year since these teams have changed slightly. But, more importantly, Argentina has a sense of swagger since their incredible victory at the Copa America this summer. In turn, Lionel Scaloni’s side has won the last two matches they played in, barring a suspended match versus Brazil.

Additionally, Paulo Dybala and Sergio Aguero will remain out for this match. Nonetheless, a budding partnership between Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez should be enough to see Argentina score some goals. Paraguay sit just outside the realm of World Cup qualification, which is why I think Argentina will see another commanding victory.

Pick: Argentina -1.5 (+180)

Uruguay vs Colombia Prediction

Next, Uruguay and Colombia face-off also at 7:00 pm EST, at the Parque Central.

Firstly, this is another rematch from Matchday 3. However, unlike the match above, the reverse fixture between these teams had a clear winner. In fact, Uruguay won that match 3-0, thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Darwin Núñez.

It was a dominant performance, and with a two-point advantage in the table, remains the reason Colombia sits outside of automatic qualification. Despite this, these countries also squared off at this summer’s Copa America quarterfinals. That match was highlighted by David Ospina’s heroics in the net, as his two penalty saves saw Colombia advance.

Nonetheless, Uruguay have had the better World Cup Qualifying campaign so far. They had to tough it out last month in three games, without either Suarez or Cavani up top. But, the duo is set to return for Uruguay, which could cause serious trouble for Davinson Sanchez and Yerry Mina in the Colombian defense.

Therefore, the best bet for this match is the Uruguay moneyline.

Pick: Uruguay moneyline (+105)

Peru vs Chile Prediction

Finally, the last match on Thursday features Peru and Chile, which kicks off at 9:00 pm EST at the Estadio Nacional in Lima.

Overall, this match is interesting because it features two sides outside of qualification, that simply should be doing better. Chile especially, are a talented side that should have more than seven points through nine games.

Moreover, the last time these two countries played, Arturo Vidal scored a brace to see Chile win by a 2-0 scoreline. Vidal is basically the crux of this Chile side, and his performance against Peru will be paramount. Alongside him, Alexis Sanchez is expected to make his return, which could provide some more offensive creativity.

Conversely, Peru have only won once out of their last six. So, despite their slight advantage in the table, I expect them to lose once again to Chile.

Pick: Chile moneyline (+190)
