Krejcikova’s First US Open Quarterfinal

25-year old Krejcikova played an epic battle against ninth seed Garbine Muguruza, to earn her spot in the final eight at the US Open for the first time in her career.

The 2021 French Open champion went on to beat Muguruza 6-3, 7-6(4), having now won 29 of her past 32 matches, which includes four win over Top 10 players. She has the opportunity to increase that number by one as she takes on World No. 2, Sabalenka tonight.

Krejcikova controlled the first set with ease, and managed to start the second set jumping out to a 4-0 lead. She ended the match with 29 winners and 28 unforced errors, in comparison to Muguruza’s 20 winners and 24 unforced errors.

There was some slight concern as Krejcikova showed troubles of breathing and catching her breath post match. She did not do post-match interviews, and had doctors help her off the court.

Sabalenka Continues to Impress

The Belarusian has been playing great tennis at the US Open this year, putting on a show of raw strength and talent. The 23-year old has been hitting the ball exceptionally well, and is coming off a dominant 6-4, 6-1 win over 15th seed Elise Mertens.

Sabalenka has had herself quite a 2021 season, having now recorded 41 match wins. This has really been a career defining year for the 23-year old. Prior to Wimbledon earlier this year, Sabalenka had not advanced to a Grand Slam quarterfinal, and now she’s gone back-to-back.

Sabalenka has continued to grow her game, as she continues to hit powerful groundstrokes match after match. As it stands, Sabalenka will be heading into this quarterfinal match with a slight edge, as we’re not sure where Krejcikova’s health and fitness stands.

Head-to-Head

These two are fairly familiar with each other in double, having played each other a few times, but this is only the second meeting between the two in singles play.

Their one and only singles match came in 2020 during the semifinals of the Linz Open. Sabalenka captured that win in three sets to lead their head-to-head record 1-0.

Best Bet

It’s tricky to know how Krejcikova will come out tonight given how it all ended last match. At this point in the tournament, all the players are fighters, and give everything they have. But it’s possible that fatigue and other health related issues come up.

Krejcikova has a bit of an edge over Sabalenka in terms of variety of game. The Czech can make her opponent go all over the court, while she maintains control of the pace. Sabalenka’s serve has also been a slight area of concern, as she’s coming off 10 double faults in her fourth round match.

Regardless of the winner here, expect this match to also go the distance. Krejcikova’s health is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Best Bet: Ov 2.5 sets (+118)
