My confidence in this number stems directly from Tiafoe’s overwhelming year-to-date advantage and the current Elo gap. Both men have played exactly 21 tournaments this season, yet Tiafoe has amassed 1,840 race points (No. 15) compared to 575 for Cilic (No. 78).

That gives Tiafoe more than 76% of the combined ranking points between the two, and the Tennis Abstract Elo board tells a similar story: Tiafoe sits No. 17 overall at 1901.9 Elo, while Cilic is No. 49 at 1796.4.

Because Elo ratings reward opponent quality rather than simply ranking points by round or tournament, that gap is especially useful for isolating current playing level.
