The bottom half of the Wimbledon men’s singles draw has had a few more upsets than the top half.

In all, five of the 16 seeds were eliminated in the first round.

But that doesn’t include a pair of top contenders who withdrew before their opening matches because of COVID – recent former finalists Matteo Berrettini and Marin Cilic. Both were in the bottom half, replaced by lucky losers.

Only Nadal is among the top three favorites before the event began.  And the current Wimbledon odds haven’t changed that much although Nadal’s have improved, and Carlos Alcaraz’s (after his tough opening round) have dropped.

Wimbledon Day 4 Parlay

The odds are fairly close on a lot of these second-round matches.

But a tennis parlay makes things very, very interesting if the underdogs can come through.

We’ve selected three very possible upsets that, put together, work out to a whopping +2911.

• British up-and-comer Jack Draper to upset No. 19 Alex de Minaur
• Lucky loser Hugo Grenier to continue his run and take care of Chilean clay-courter Cristian Garin
• Clever Frenchman Hugo Gaston to take out No. 27 seed Sonego.

As it stands, one of Jenson Brooksby, Benjamin Bonzi, Carin, or Grenier will make the second week.

And one of Botic Van de Zandschulp, Emil Ruusuvuori, Richard Gasquet, and Mackenzie also will make the second week.

Wimbledon Day 4 Matches to Watch

Denis Shapovalov vs Brandon Nakashima Pick

Shapovalov is clearly the more talented of the two players, but the odds are a lot closer than they should be, based on talent alone.

That’s because Shapovalov can go off the boil, and suffer bad patches of play that can cost him sets – and matches.

He pulled it together in his first-round win over Arthur Rinderknech when he was down two sets to one, and an early break in the fourth. But that’s not always the case.

However, given he suffered three consecutive opening losses on grass before arriving at Wimbledon, it could be the victory that kickstarts a serious run. Shapovalov finds himself in a quarter of the draw that gives him huge opportunities to reach the semifinals for the second straight year.

He’ll likely have a swoon, but expect him to come through.

Prediction: Shapovalov in Four Sets (+350)

Cressy vs Sock Pick

This is Cressy’s first Wimbledon main draw, although his throwback serve-volley game is made for grass.

He was considered to be a real threat to upset No. 6 seed Félix Auger-Aliassime in the first round. And it took him four hours, 10 minutes for four sets, but he did the job.

Sock is a different opponent, one with fewer expectations despite his grass pedigree (as a two-time doubles champion).

This one shapes up to be a battle of serves. And the value is likely to be in the number of tiebreaks. You would expect Sock to come to the net more than Auger-Aliassime did in the first round – to try to beat Cressy at his own game a little more successfully.

Predicting tiebreaks means that each set that involves one is 13 games, so the games total should also be high (go with over 44.5 games at +125)

Prediction: Over 1.5 Tiebreaks (+108)
