  • The Connecticut Sun are 5.5-point road favorites over the Dallas Wings in a WNBA playoff game on Wednesday, August 24
  • The Wings will be playing host to a postseason game for the first time since the team relocated to Dallas
  • This Connecticut Sun vs Dallas Wings matchup is the third and deciding game of their best-of-three quarterfinal series

A lot of firsts are on the line for the Dallas Wings (1-1), but foremost on that list must be beating the Connecticut Sun (1-1) one more time so that they can move on in the WNBA playoffs when the two meet in this Connecticut Sun vs Dallas Wings Game 3 matchup.

Deadlocked 1-1 in their best-of-three WNBA quarterfinal series, the Wings staved off elimination with a Game 2 victory. It was the first playoff win for the franchise since moving to Dallas. And this decisive Game 3 contest will mark the first-ever WNBA playoff game to be contested in Dallas.

Despite all that the Wings seem to have going for them, it’s the Sun who are being made 5.5-point road favorites by oddsmakers. Connecticut is 6-0 against the spread over the club’s past six road games.

At a moneyline of -235, the Sun are given an implied probability of victory of 70.15%. Bet $10 on Connecticut to cover the spread and if the Sun does indeed come through with the victory, that will provide a payout of $14.30.

The WNBA public betting splits are showing that few expect that the Sun will be going down. In the spread, Connecticut is drawing 80% of the handle and 65% of the bets. Moneyline wagering is also backing the Sun to the tune of 62% of handle and 83% of bets. The public is divided on the total. The over is collecting 75% of bets, while the under is getting 77% of the handle.

Connecticut is the +400 second betting choice in the WNBA Championship odds. Dallas is the longest shot left in this betting market at +3000.

Wings Have More Than a Prayer

Dallas finished the regular season 18-18, while Connecticut was 25-11. However, in head-to-head play, the Wings took two of three games from the Sun.

It looked like Dallas would be packing and heading home quickly when #3 seed Connecticut grounded the Wings 93-68 in Game 1 of this season. Minus leading scorer Arike Ogunbowale, out with an abdominal injury, there didn’t seem much cause for optimism in the Big D.

However, #6 seed Dallas came roaring back to take Game 2 by an 89-79 verdict. Kayla Thornton led the way with 20 points, her career playoff high. Coming off the bench to add 17 points and grab 11 rebound was Teaira McCowan. The Wings led by as many as 31 points, enabling them to stave off a late 22-2 run by the Sun.

The last time the Dallas franchise won a WNBA postseason game was on September 23, 2009. Back then, they were the Detroit Shock.

Will Sun Be Setting On Connecticut?

The Sun were held to seven first-quarter points during Game 2. That’s the second-lowest total score for a quarter in WNBA playoff history.

Connecticut never led the entire game. The Sun trailed by double digits on the scoreboard for the entire final 26 minutes of the game. Jonquel Jones and Brionna Jones each scored 20 points for Connecticut and DiJonai Carrington added 13 points.

Connecticut outscored Dallas in the paint (42-40) and in bench points (35-27). However, the Sun lost the battle in second-chance points (23-11) and fast-break points (10-4).

The Sun finished the WNBA regular season leading the league in rebounds per game (37.1), steals per game (8.8), fast-break points per game (12.6), second-chance points per game (13.5) and net rating (9.5).

Sun vs Wings Prediction

Dallas was a disappointing 8-10 straight up at home this season. Connecticut was 12-6 SU on the road. That was tied for the second-best road record in the WNBA this season, behind only the Las Vegas Aces (13-5).

As a road favorite this season, the Sun are 7-5 ATS. The Wings are 3-4 ATS as a home underdog. Dallas is 8-15-2 ATS over the club’s last 25 home games. The Wings did cover and win outright as 5-point home underdogs in an 82-71 victory over Connecticut on July 5.
