2026/27 Premier League Relegation Odds Movement Timeline

  • July 27 – After their surprising run through the EFL Playoffs earlier this year, it’s no surprise that Hull City (-500) has opened as big favorites to be relegated this season. They’re followed not too far behind from their promotion compadres Ipswich and Coventry, both at -170. It’s a little surprising to see Sunderland next at +275, despite their 7th place finish last year, or that Man City is just off the table at +1200, out of some feint hope that the Premier League will finally hold them accountable for their financial breaches.

2016-17Hull, Middlesbrough, Sunderland34, 28, 24

35 points is typically the approximate number a team needs to avoid the drop in the Premier League. For Wolves and Burnley relegation was all but guaranteed, but West Ham suffered the indignity of surpassing that average and suffering relegation anyway.

The Hammers were scrapping for weeks with Tottenham in attempt to avoid 18th place, but managing just one win in their last four games, compared to Tottenham’s two wins and a draw, was enough to send West Ham down and keep Spurs in the EPL for another year.

Wolves’ point total of 20 was an admirable result for a 20th place team, but it was largely buoyed by their 11 draws. Their win total (3) eclipsed that of the previous season’s last-place team, Southampton, by just a single win.

Similarly, Burnley’s 19th place finish was built off of 10 draws, but just 4 wins. Incidentally, they rarely inspired at Turf Moor, as their home record (2-7-10) was worst in the EPL last season.

Of the previous 30 newly promoted teams over the past 10 seasons, just over half (16) of them have been immediately relegated back to the Championship.

Joining the EPL for the 2026/27 season are Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Hull City.

Coventry and Ipswich finished first and second in the Championship in 2024/25 and are respectively returning to the Premier League after twenty-five and one year absences. Joining them is Hull City, who fell out of the Premier League in 2010 and dropped all the way down to League 1 in 2021 before bouncing back and winning last season’s playoff.

Coventry comfortably claimed their Championship title with 95 points from 28 wins, 11 draws, and 7 losses, eleven points ahead of Ipswich (84) with a record of 23-15-8. Hull City finished sixth with a record of 21-10-15 and 73 points, qualifying for the playoffs on the final day after Wrexham could only manage a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough.

That final day miracle wasn’t their only bit of magic: Hull City became just the sixth team to finish 6th in the Championship and go on to win the EFL Playoffs. They did just that by defeating Millwall and Middlesbrough to capture the final promotion spot.
