French Open Day 4 Odds & Picks – Men’s Singles Second Round (May 25)

- Of the 16 seeds in the top half of the French Open men’s singles draw, 13 have survived the first round
- Favorites Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz are all in this half
- Read on as we break down the odds and pick some winners from Wednesday’s second-round matches
The pre-tournament favorites – Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal – remain the strong favorites to win the French Open.
And Rafael Nadal’s chronically painful foot looked very good in his opening round win.

As round 2 begins – and the champion expected out of this top half – Djokovic, Nadal and Alcaraz are massive favorites to win their second-round matches.
Especially Nadal, who gets the night-session match against undersized, feisty French lefty Corentin Moutet.

Korda vs Gasquet Prediction
There’s a 14-year-old difference between the 21-year-old American and the 35-year-old Frenchman, who is playing his 19th French Open (to Korda’s third).
While Korda had a nice run a year ago in Paris, Gasquet used to be a regular in the second week. And he played well last week in Geneva.
Plus, he may well be flying with the “Tsonga effect”, after his friend and countryman retired Monday night in a touching ceremony on the centre court.
Fellow Frenchman Benoit Paire, who also attended, and his partner went right out after the ceremony and upset the No. 5 seeds in doubles.

And then Gilles Simon, another contemporary in his final French Open, came out flying against No. 16 seed Pablo Carreño Busta Tuesday night.
Gasquet will feel the sands in the hourglass pouring down after that. And more pertinently, Korda has never played a Frenchman … at the French Open. He has no idea of what he’s in for, and he’s not an experienced-enough competitor to just roll with it.
Pick: Gasquet (+210) in an upset
Zverev vs Baez Prediction
The No. 3 seed is a huge favorite in this one (-700). But Zverev can have periods during matches where his serve deserts him and he struggles.
And an Energizer Bunny wall like Baez, who is playing the best tennis of his life, is the best kind of opponent (or worst for Zverev) to face when that happens. Because everything will be coming back, and Zverev might press even more.
Baez played him close in a second-round match in Rome a couple of weeks ago.
The German should still win. But it feels as though it won’t be as straightforward as all that.
The value prop in this one is in predicting how long it will take Zverev to win

Félix Auger-Aliassime vs Camilo Ugo Carabelli Prediction
The Canadian, who checked off two firsts in his first round – first main-draw win at Roland Garros, and first comeback from two-sets-to-none down – will be happy to see another qualifier given he has the three favorites in his quarter. It only gets trickier from here.

The qualifier Camilo Ugo Carabelli, a 22-year-old currently ranked No. 155, needed four hours, 17 minutes to get by Aslan Karatsev in a fifth-set match tiebreak to win his first-ever Grand Slam main-draw match. He has very little to lose in this one.
This French Open is the first ATP-level tournament of the Argentine’s entire career. Other than a brief trip to Australia at the start of 2022 to take part in his first-ever Grand Slam qualifying, he’s spent the whole year playing Challengers on clay in South America.
He’s already a winner. And unless Auger-Aliassime gets off to another slow start (as he did in the first round against another South American qualifier, Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru), it should be a mismatch as the French Open odds indicate.
Should be. Auger-Aliassime has a tendency to make people bite their fingernails at times.
