After a 6-7 season last year, North Texas is already at six wins through seven games. They boast the best scoring offense in college football, and they have an outside shot at a CFP bid if they can run the table in the American and exact their revenge on USF in the conference title game.

Drew Mestemaker leads the conference with 17 passing touchdowns. He has also added four rushing touchdowns while only tossing three interceptions. Outside of a disastrous game against USF, Mestemaker has a case for being the best Group of Six quarterback this season.

The rushing attack is equally dominant with a two-headed monster of Caleb Hawkins and Makenzie McGill. Hawkins leads all running backs with a 91.3 PFF rushing grade, and he has averaged a terrific 6.7 yards per carry. McGill has also been efficient, averaging over five yards per rush while scoring five times.

Wyatt Young leads the receiver group with 396 yards and a conference-leading six touchdown grabs. However, two other Mean Green are over 300 yards this season. Even Hawkins has been involved in the passing attack, averaging 37.5 receiving yards per game.

While the scoring defense has been below average, North Texas has several defensive studs. Linebacker Ethan Wesloski leads the team with 6.0 tackles for a loss. Kevin Huddleston and Ethan Day have nabbed at least three sacks each, and David Fisher has swatted away five passes.

Charlotte, on the other hand, is one of the more unmitigated disasters in FBS this season. They are 0-6 against FBS teams, only managing to beat FCS Monmouth with a last-second touchdown. They have a bottom-10 offense and defense by points.

Three different quarterbacks have been at the helm for Charlotte this season, and they have been different flavors of average. Last week, both Grayson Loftis and Zach Wilcke saw action. Loftis completed under 50% of passes and threw a pick-six. Wilcke came in relief, adding a late rushing touchdown.

The Charlotte rushing attack is also a mediocre committee. Three backs have at least 40 carries, but none of them have averaged four yards per carry. Rod Gainey Jr. leads the team with 51 carries for 201 yards.

The receiving weapons have been a bit more solid. Javen Nicholas leads the team with 34 catches and 354 yards. E. Jai Mason has caught four touchdowns, and he is the more explosive of the receiver duo, averaging 14.8 yards per catch.

Defensively, the 49ers have largely been forgettable. They have recorded just six sacks and two interceptions on the season. The standout is Reid Williford, who leads the team in solo tackles, tackles for a loss, and sacks.

North Texas vs Charlotte Pick

  • Over 60.5 (+100 ESPNBet)

Here are the three primary reasons why I’m taking Over 60.5.

  • North Texas is the highest scoring offense in FBS, averaging 45.0 points per game. Out of seven games, five of North Texas’ games have featured at least 61 points, including all three American games. UNT’s defense has assisted here, allowing 25.7 points per game, ranking 81st in FBS.
  • While Charlotte’s offense has been inept (129th in scoring), their defense is prone to allowing overs. The 49ers have allowed 34.9 points per game, a bottom-10 mark in FBS. They allowed 35 points to FCS Monmouth, 54 points to USF, and 49 points to Temple.
  • Charlotte’s offense has been largely atrocious, but they have an uncanny ability to score points in the fourth quarter. They have scored a touchdown in six of seven fourth quarters, ranking 50th in points per fourth quarter. This matters because Charlotte can keep the over alive late in games. Last week is a perfect example as the 49ers scored a touchdown with just 63 seconds left, cashing the over in a 35-point loss.

Despite sharing a conference since 2015, North Texas and Charlotte have only played twice in their history. Charlotte won both matchups, going 1-0 both at home and on the road.

Charlotte dominated in the most recent matchup. They led by no fewer than 14 points for the entire second, and running back Aaron McAllister scored a pair of 60-plus-yard touchdowns.

On the North Texas side, future fourth-round pick Jaelon Darden caught 13 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Fellow future NFL player Upton Stout was in his first of five collegiate seasons, recording three tackles and a pass deflection.
