Connor McDavid and the Oilers visit Alex Ovechkin’s Capitals Tuesday night in a matchup of struggling teams. Both squads have lost seven of their last 10 games despite having two of the game’s greatest players.
Puck drops at 7:00 PM ET from Capital One Arena in Washington. TNT has the national broadcast with streaming available on HBO Max.
Here is a look at my Oilers vs Capitals prediction, plus a breakdown of the Wednesday NHL odds.
Oilers vs Capitals Prediction
My Oilers vs Capitals prediction leans toward Washington at home. The Capitals have won the last two meetings between these teams, including a 7-3 blowout last February. Edmonton’s goaltending remains a disaster, while Washington’s Logan Thompson has been lights out.
The goaltending gap can’t be ignored. Thompson sports a 1.85 GAA and .925 save percentage, while Stuart Skinner sits at 2.86 and .889. Edmonton’s team save percentage ranks dead last at .865. Washington’s at .906, fifth in the NHL.
Team Stats Comparison
Edmonton does have advantages elsewhere. Their power play runs at 30.8%, third in the league. Washington’s penalty kill ranks 26th at 72.6%. If the Oilers draw enough calls, they can make this interesting. McDavid has 30 points in 21 games while Leon Draisaitl adds 24 with six power-play goals.
The problem for Edmonton? They allow 3.48 goals per game, 28th in the NHL. Washington gives up just 2.47 per game, second-best in the league. The Caps have been awful lately (3-5-2 in their last 10), but they’re still better defensively than this Oilers team.
Ovechkin’s heating up with goals in back-to-back games and four in his last seven. He scored the winner on Monday against Los Angeles for his 903rd career goal. The Great 8 loves playing Edmonton too, netting 17 goals in 26 career games against the Oil. Washington is 17-5 in their last 22 against Pacific Division teams.
Oilers vs Capitals Pick
- Capitals Moneyline (-115)
Washington moneyline at -115 is my official pick. The Capitals are 12-4 in their last 16 home games against Edmonton, dominating this matchup at Capital One Arena. This Oilers team isn’t the powerhouse of recent years either. They’re 4-4-2 in their last 10 and just got crushed 5-1 in Buffalo.
The over 6 at -110 is also worth a look. The over is 9-1-2 in Edmonton’s last 12 games after scoring two goals or less in their previous game. It’s also 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in Washington. Both teams have offensive weapons, but only one has competent goaltending.
For props, Ovechkin anytime goal scorer at +140 looks solid. He’s scored in three of his last four games and owns Edmonton historically. McDavid over 1.5 points at -130 offers value too. His eight-game point streak ended Monday, but he should bounce back against Washington’s 30th-ranked penalty kill.
Oilers vs Capitals Odds
Washington opened -110 and has moved slightly to -115. The Capitals now have an implied probability to beat Edmonton. The total opened at 6.5 and hasn’t budged. Both teams having equal rest keeps the line tight.
