If you like offense, tonight’s Heat vs Hornets 9th vs 10th place NBA Play-In Tournament game should be appointment viewing. These are the two highest scoring teams in this year’s Play-In Tournament, and Miami features by far the worst defense of the eight teams who qualified. Online sportsbooks have responded by posting a 228.5-point total in the NBA odds, but as far as I’m concerned that number isn’t nearly high enough.
Below, you’ll find the reasons why I’m betting the over in my Heat vs Hornets expert picks and predictions, plus how to watch the first Play-In Tournament contest of 2026.

Betting over 228.5 tonight is far from a contrarian pick. As of Tuesday morning, a whopping 95% of the tickets and 97% of the money in the NBA public betting splits is backing that side of the total. To find out why, look no further than the style of play of both these teams.
Let’s start with the Heat. Miami plays at the league’s fastest pace. Their entire system is built around speed and getting downhill, foregoing screens in an effort to get shots up as quick as possible before opponents can set their defense. For the most, it’s been a successful strategy as they rank behind only the NBA Championship odds contender Nuggets in points per game.
NBA Pace Stats
The problem is, the Heat’s defense can’t stop a nosebleed. They rank second worst in defensive rating over the last 15 games and surrender more points than any team that qualified not only for the Play-In Tournament, but the playoffs as well. There’s a consequence to playing as fast as they do and it results in more possessions for enemy shooters who make Miami’s sloppy defense pay.
The Heat’s pace is a recipe for disaster versus the Hornets, who thrive on triples. Charlotte takes the second most 3-pointers in the NBA and make them at the third highest rate. They should be able to find plenty of transition 3’s off short Miami misses, while their half court offense is also quite successful, ranking above league average in assists. The Hornets are also fifth in offensive rebounds this season, giving them plenty of opportunities for second chance buckets and easy put backs.
As for the Charlotte defense, its susceptible to being bullied inside signalling the potential for a ceiling performance from Bam Adebayo. Miami was +22.4 against the Hornets when Bam was on the court this season, and given the elimination component of this contest, we should expect to see him for nearly 40 minutes tonight.
Finally, the trends love the over. All four games between these two squads sailed over the total this year, each clearing 233 points, with three contests reaching 242+ points. Overs were 15-7 in Miami contests where both Norman Powell and Tyler Herro suited up, and Charlotte’s games were 5-2 to the over versus teams who play at a 105.0 pace or higher – like the Heat.
Heat vs Hornets Odds
Moving over to the Heat vs Hornets odds, where the best place to bet the over currently is at DraftKings. Their 228.5 point total is a point lower than the rest of the market, and given the heavy action on the over it won’t be long before they adjust their line as well.
As for the spread, if you like Miami to cover, stick with DraftKings where you can get +6.5 at elevated juice. If you’re on the Hornets, FanDuel’s -5.5 line at -110 odds is the best price in market.
