After claiming top spot in Group D, Team USA will likely be rewarded with a round of 32 fixture against the third-place team in Group B, Bosnia & Herzegovina. (A slim chance remains that USA will face the third-place team in Group I, but this matchup is certain enough for books to open the odds.)

If USA vs BiH comes to fruition, the game will take place in Santa Clara, California, on Wednesday, July 1.

The opening line heavily favors the Americans not just advancing but doing so in regular time.

The opening three-way moneyline lists the USMNT as -145 (59.18% implied win probability) with a full-time draw at +260 (27.78%) and a Bosnia victory in 90 minutes at +425 (19.05%).

Including a potential extra-time period, the US is a -235 favorite to advance to the round of 16. BiH comes back as a +185 underdog to reach the round of 16 for the first time in the country’s history.

Bosnia has only played in one previous World Cup (2014), when they fell a point short of reaching the knockout stages in a then-32-team tournament.

USMNT Deemed Realistic World Cup Title Threat

The USA’s first two games of the tournament – a 4-1 rout of Paraguay and a dominant 2-0 win over Australia – were a boon to their odds to win the World Cup.

At prediction site Kalshi, the USMNT was trading at just 3¢ (+3233 odds) to win the tournament before their first group-stage game.

Heading into the round of 32, they have improved to 4.9¢ (+1941).

Only eight teams remain ahead of the USA and they are all absolute heavyweights: France (19.9¢), Argentina (15.5¢), Spain (13.3¢), England (10.4¢), Portugal (8.9¢), Netherlands (6.8¢), Brazil (5.8¢), and Germany (5.2¢).

Bosnia is trading at just 1¢.

If the USMNT manages to get past Bosnia, they will face the winner of the match between first-place in Group G (likely to be Egypt) and a certain third-place team in the round of 16, a highly enviable draw. However, if the rankings/seeds hold, Spain would be waiting in the quarterfinals.

Is Pulisic Healthy?

The biggest concern for Team USA after their opening win against Paraguay was the health of star winger Christian Pulisic. The AC Milan forward was laboring from a calf strain, so much so that he sat out the win over Australia.

But latest reports are very encouraging. Pulisic, himself, is lobbying coach Mauricio Pocchettino to play USA’s meaningless final group-stage game against Turkiye.
