Lionel Messi and defending-champion Argentina will meet Egypt in the round of 16 on Tuesday, July 7, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET.

Egypt punched their ticket the hard way, beating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Argentina had their own scare, surviving a wild 3-2 extra-time win over debutants Cape Verde to set up the meeting.

The opening Argentina vs Egypt odds make the Albiceleste overwhelming favorites to book a spot in the quarterfinals.

The three-way moneyline at bet365 lists Argentina at -300 to win in regulation, with a 90-minute draw at +400 and an Egypt upset at +750. The total has opened at 2.5 goals, priced even at -110 either way.

The odds to advance show the real gap. Argentina is -800 to reach the quarterfinals (88.9% implied) and Egypt is +500 (16.7%) at bet365.

At prediction site Kalshi, the same market has Argentina at 84¢ (-525) and Egypt at 30¢ (+233). Kalshi gives Argentina a slightly lower chance to advance, so it’s the better payout on the champions, while bet365’s +500 pays more on the Egypt longshot.

Argentina’s number swung wildly during the Cape Verde scare, dipping into the 50s in cents before the champions pulled clear. That it took a scramble to see off a debutant tells you Egypt won’t be a total pushover in Atlanta.

Argentina Survives Cape Verde Scare

The champions were never supposed to sweat this one. Argentina opened as a -700 favorite to beat Cape Verde in regulation and a staggering -1600 lock to advance, with the debutants out at +900.

Cape Verde didn’t read the script. Lionel Messi’s early opener was canceled out by Deroy Duarte, and when Lisandro Martínez restored the lead in extra time, Sidny Lopes Cabral answered with a stunning curler to make it 2-2. The winner came off a Messi corner in the 111th minute, initially credited to Cristian Romero but ruled a Diney Borges own goal, and Argentina held on for a 3-2 win in one of the games of the tournament.

Argentina’s Path to the Round of 16

Argentina ran the table in Group J, going a perfect 3-0-0. Lionel Scaloni’s side beat Algeria 3-0, Austria 2-0, and Jordan 3-1, scoring eight goals across the three games.

Messi has been the engine, accounting for six of those eight group-stage goals. He opened with a hat-trick against Algeria on his 200th Argentina cap, then added two more against Austria and one against Jordan.

His run has been historic. The opener against Cape Verde was Messi’s eighth straight World Cup game with a goal, a record, and pushed him to 20 career World Cup goals — two clear of France’s Kylian Mbappé and further out front on the all-time list.

Egypt Makes History vs Australia

Egypt reached the round of 16 for the first time in the federation’s history, ending a long wait in dramatic fashion. The Pharaohs drew Australia 1-1 through 120 minutes before winning the shootout 4-2.

Emam Ashour headed home the opener, only for a Mohamed Hany own goal to level it and force extra time. In the shootout, Australia’s Harry Souttar blazed over the bar and 18-year-old Lucas Herrington hit the crossbar, opening the door for Hossam Abdelmaguid to convert the decisive kick.

Egypt are only the second African nation to win a World Cup penalty shootout, after Morocco. They have now scored six goals in four games this tournament, more than they managed across their previous three World Cup appearances combined.

Mohamed Salah, deployed centrally this tournament, sits level with Belgium’s Leandro Trossard as the competition’s top chance-creator with 16.

H2H History: ARG vs EGY

These two have almost no shared history. Argentina and Egypt have met just once, a March 2008 friendly that Argentina won 2-0.

There is no World Cup history between them, so July 7 in Atlanta will be a first.
