  • It’s a battle of AL Central bottom-feeders when the Kansas City Royals take on the Detroit Tigers
  • Detroit opened the series with a 4-2 win Thursday, and have won six of the last eight head-to-head matchups

The Detroit Tigers, currently distant contenders for an AL Wild Card, will look to keep moving up the leaderboard as they host the AL Central bottom feeders from Kansas City.

The Royals, who enter as heavy road underdogs in the MLB odds, are still in the postseason picture, but there’s already little room for error. Facing star pitcher Tarik Skubal Friday isn’t going to help.

Action gets underway at 6:40pm ET from Comerica Park in Detroit, with MLB TV providing the broadcast coverage.

Royals vs Tigers Picks

Noah Cameron Over 2.5 Earned Runs (-149 at BetMGM): Given his tendency to allow 1.25 home runs per nine innings, expecting Cameron to surrender three runs is mathematically sound. Check MLB player props for additional value.

Under 7.5 Runs (49¢ at Kalshi): Sportsbooks heavily shade Skubal to suppress scoring. Expect a lower-scoring affair dictated by the ace.

When breaking down this AL Central clash, the narrative begins and ends with the massive discrepancy in the MLB probable pitchers. Detroit sends elite ace Tarik Skubal to the hill, making it incredibly difficult to fade the home side.

Skubal brings true ace pedigree to the mound. Backed by a pristine 2.83 ERA and a suffocating 0.93 WHIP, he has overwhelmed hitters all season. His 2.85 FIP mirrors his actual ERA, confirming his success is no fluke.

On the other side, Kansas City relies on Noah Cameron. He has struggled to limit traffic on the basepaths all season. The season has been an uphill climb for Cameron. Saddled with a 5.28 ERA, he puts himself in stressful situations by allowing a .279 opponent batting average. Going head-to-head with an elite counterpart leaves Cameron with zero margin for error.

This pitching advantage extends into the later innings, as Detroit holds a sturdy 3.80 bullpen ERA compared to a volatile Kansas City relief corps sitting at 5.43.

Reviewing situational splits reveals a glaring mismatch. The visiting team struggles immensely on the road, while the home side finds comfort at Comerica Park.

The numbers paint a bleak picture outside of Kauffman Stadium. On the highway, the visiting offense averages a paltry 3.71 runs per game while slugging just 0.92 home runs.

Conversely, the home offense sees a noticeable uptick, plating 4.33 runs per game with a .724 OPS. Be sure to reference MLB starting lineups for final confirmations before the first pitch.

The home side is 4-2 as a moneyline favorite over their last 10 contests. That’s enough to for me to take the Tigers on the spread.

The betting odds heavily reflect the pitching mismatch on the mound.

Oddsmakers show immense respect for the home ace Skubal, forcing bettors to lay significant juice on the moneyline, which now sits at -290 at FanDuel. Kalshi also offers enticing alternative markets, such as Detroit winning the first 5 innings at 59¢. A pick for the Royals to win outright pays out at +240 odds, courtesy of bet365.

On the runline, taking the Tigers to win by at least two runs offers -122 odds, while the Royals get +108 odds at DraftKings, even though they are getting an extra 1.5 runs against the spread.

Neither the runline nor the total has seen movement from their opening numbers. The total remaining stagnant at 7.5 emphasizes the expectation of a lower-scoring affair.
