The Crimson Tide rolled past South Carolina 49-18 last weekend, while the Bulldogs held off Missouri 31-24. Mississippi State now gets a chance to follow that win with a much bigger statement at home.

I like Alabama laying fewer than seven points. Keelon Russell threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns without an interception against South Carolina. That gives Alabama a quarterback playing with confidence, backed by a defense capable of creating a short field. A repeat of that combination would put plenty of pressure on the Bulldogs to keep answering.

Mississippi State can certainly move the ball. Kamario Taylor threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns against Missouri, and the Bulldogs average 533.3 yards per game. However, their defense has surrendered 249 passing yards per game, giving Russell an opening to continue his strong start.

My concern with the favorite is Taylor keeping this competitive deep into the second half. Still, I prefer Alabama’s balance and ability to force mistakes. These quarterbacks combined for 725 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns last weekend. Taylor gives Mississippi State a credible path to an upset, but sustaining drives against Alabama’s run defense will be a tougher assignment than simply trading explosive plays.

I lean Over 59.5 as a secondary angle. Alabama averages 48 points and Mississippi State 43, although those early-season averages are not a prediction of what they will score against each other. The Bulldogs’ best chance is to keep Taylor out of predictable passing downs. Their offense has produced more total yards per game than Alabama’s, so I would not dismiss the home underdog simply because of the name on the other sideline. Mississippi State has the production to make Alabama defend the full field.

That is where the Tide’s run defense matters. If Alabama can hold up without committing extra defenders near the line of scrimmage, its secondary has a better chance of limiting Taylor’s big plays.
